The raffle was a fund-raiser for a scholorship given by the association. Ernest Little made the presentation. DSS May Employee of the Month Tammy Brewer, an income maintenance caseworker II in the Family and Children Medicaid Unit at Hoke County Dept, of Social Services, was named DSS May Employee of the Month. She has worked with Hoke DSS since July of 2001. Cleo Bratcher, DSS board member, makes the presentation. Walcott appointed field director for Scotland/Hoke Pinesof Carolina Girl Scout Coun cil has appointed Stephanie Walcott as a field director for Scotland and Hoke counties. Her responsibilities will include membership recruitment, volunteer support, and the coordination of out reach efforts across the county on a full-time basis. A Scotland County resident, Walcott received her bachelor of arts degree in 1-nglish from St. Andrews Presbyterian College She is currently pursuing a master's degree in reading education at UNC-Pembroke. Her previous work experience in cludes working as a literary instructor and a communication skills and so cial studies teacher in Scotland County. The projects shall include limited and designated services for children with disabili ties enrolled in private schools which are located in the bound aries of Hoke County. Unilever, Girl Scouts team up for ‘Smart Choices’ Raeford Unilever employees teamed up with local Girl Scouts to launch a national program this week called Unicjuely Me! The Girl Scout/ Unilever self-esteem program's goal is to foster self-esteem in 8-to-14- year-old Girl Scouts across the coun try and in Puerto Rico. Unilever and Girl Scouts are kick ing off the program now because they say summer time is when children are more likely to engage in risky behav ior. More than 1,260 boxes contain ing self-esteem building tips for kids, topsoil healthy eating, hygiene,gen eral wel Iness, summer safety and nec essary products for children and their families w'ill be delivered May 28 to l-'ast and West Hoke miildle schools. Collec tively, more than 10,000 boxes will be assembled and distributed to chil dren and families via some 95 chari table organizations. ‘Uniquely Me!' will roll out its core curriculum during the back-to- school season this fall. The progres sive new program integrates the latest research on self-esteem issues Irom The Girl Scout Research Institute. The curriculum will include six new activity booklets on self-esteem - available in nnglish and bilingual English/Spanish versions. Because girls in different age groups are faced with unique social pressures and are experiencing different phases of de velopment, ‘Uniquely Me!' booklets will target three age groups: 8-10,11- 12 and" 13-14 years of age. The cur- ricidum will be accessible to children of all socio-economic backgrounds with particular emphasis on underserved populations across the country. Unilever and Girl Scouts ot the U.S.A. expect to reach more than 1.5 million children nationwide in this community service initiative. Reward offered for breaking and entering of cars Raeford-Hoke Crimestoppers is offering rewards for infornmtion concerning the breaking and enter ing of ears in Raeford. Cars were broken into on Janu ary 21 and April Ibofthisyearat Dr. Jordan's office on Campus Avenue in Raeford. Cars were also broken into at West Hoke Middle School on February 13 and April 16 of this year. Anyone who has information on these and other crimes in Raeford or Hoke County is asked to call the Crimestoppers number at 3(18-8700. Callers do not have to identify them selves but are assigned a number in order to collect reward money. Woodmen of the World Ruth Phillips Lodge meets Lodge 118, Woodmen of the World, met 'Tuesday night, May 14 fortheir regular monthly meeting with eight members present. Attendance was ilown due to several other activi ties being held. Bobby Cox called the meeting to order. A short business session was held. Plans were completed for our an nual award night, which will be held 'Tuesday night, June 11. Lodge 118 W'ill honor individuals in the commu nity for their service during the past years. Guests and members will be treated to a dinner prepared by Lodge members. The meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. Awards will be presented after dinner.
