THE NEWS-JOURNAL Raeford, N.C. June 12,2002 Museum {Continued from page I A) Built by Marcus Dew for McLauchlin and his bride from Aus tralia, Christiana, the neo-classical Greek revival frame home and its five-acre grounds were bequeathed to a nephew, Neil Fadyen, now deceased. His widow, Mary Virginia McFadyen, was accompanied by son John on Sunday. Both expressed pleasure that the home will become a museum. Mrs. McFadyen said she had once harbored a fear that the home might one day have been demolished with condos built in its place. Jane Blue Pratt Davis, a niece of the McFadyens. happily pointed out some characteristics of the house that struck her fancy when she was a child —storagecubby holes under the stairs and the tiny upstairs kitchen. Davis tilso said beveled glass in the double front doors acts like a prism, and as children she and her cousins would play with the crystal- rellected colors in the carpet in the front hall. Davis also told the story of a foot- operated ■'huz/er” in the dining room floor under the table that her aunt used for calling a kitchen servant during family meals. She said the children would sometimes scoot down in their chairs and push the button with their toes. Much to Mrs. McFadyen s amazement, the butler would appear to pick up dishes while diners were still eating.
