4B THE NEWS-JOURNAL Raeford, N.C. May 21,2003 Schools Scurlock recognizes teacher and assistant of year Cynthia Patterson-Ockletree and Carolyn Beckman were recently named Teacher and Teacher Assis tant of the Year. Patterson-Ockletree has made the daily journey from Bunnlevel in Harnett County to Raeford to teach fifth grade. She is a graduate of Lillington High School and Fayetteville State University. Patterson-Ockletree’seducational philosophy is that learning is a life long endeavor that is cultivated through the collaborative efforts of home, school, and community. Her greatest joy in is “seeing the light come on when the child understands a concept.” This dedicated teacher’s greatest personal accomplishments are giving birth to her two children, R.C. and Sparkle White, learning to love her self, and the recycling business that she and her husband Randolph have started. In addition, she loves to read and listen to music. Carolyn Beckman, who was origi nally from Albany, Georgia, came to Raeford some 30 years ago via her husband’s retirement. Jerry Beckman Sr. retired from the Marine Corps and made Raeford home. The Beckman’s have enjoyed 41 years of marriage and have three grown children, Jerry Jr., Michael and Missy. In addition, they have four grandchildren. Beckman has been employed in the field of education for four years— three of these years at Scurlock. Working with children is one of Beckman’s greatest joys in life. She looks forward to every day and is constantly looking for creative ways to help the students. She finds that her hobbies of reading and crafts help her to accomplish this task. / 'I Scurlock Assistant Teacher of the Scurlock Teacher of the Year Year Carolyn Beckman Cynthia Patterson-Ocletree Teachers, helpers recognized during Teacher Appreciation Week Scurlock educators were recog nized in a big way for their special week.
