4B THE NEWS-JOURNAL Racford, N.C. May 28,2003 Schools Upchurch PTO says thank you The Parent Teacher Organization at Upchurch Elementary showed its appreciation to teachers and staff during Teacher Appreciation Week (May 4-10). Girls learn life skills muiiiquely ME! sessions iH| »r I'v» tr ; 'r I,. '’Me II By Sara Weiner Pines of Carolina Girl Scouts Council The hallways of West Hoke Middle School are crammed with students weaving their way to buses waiting outside. Several girls form a small group near one classroom and they greet each other enthusiastically, shrieking each other's names and talk ing about their day. The door opens and the girls file into the schools chorus room, arrang ing chairs. Backpacks decorated with pins, buttons, and patches are tossed in a heap by the door and the girls rock back and forth in their chairs waiting to find out what they’ll be doing this day. These girls are members of West Hoke Middle School’s uniquely ME! group. Targeting girls ages 8-14 in underserved communities, the pro gram helps girls build skills neces sary to face life’s challenges. The core curriculum integrates the latest research from the Girl Scouts Research Institute and includes ac tivities that help girls understand and build self-esteem. Topics the girls have explored in clude substance abuse and proper hair care. “You all sound like the army in here! Calm down! shouts Consuela MePhatter, a uniquely ME! program assistant who means business. After a few more outbursts and giggles, the girls settle down and listen to the agenda for the afternoon. “Today we’re doing a service project,” says Consuela, still fighting for control of the room. “We’re going to make smallpox vaccination pack ets. What do you know about small pox?” “My mom needs to get a shot for it ‘cause she’s in the Army and I can’t be around her when she does,” says Shayla, a petite seventh-grader with stars embroidered on her jeans and an “angel” in rhinestones on her shirt. “That’s right,” says Consuela. “We’re going to help out healthcare workers by putting together packages of supplies they’ll need for the small pox vaccinations. Now I need three volunteers.” Before she can even fin ish every girls’ hand is waving in the air. Three girls are chosen to count out gauze pads, dressings, and rolls of tape. Other girls fill plastic bags with the piles of supplies. They form an assembly line and after some disor der, the packages are assembled. The service project is the first the girls have completed as agroup. Typi cally, meetings are centered on a sub ject for the week. The girls discuss that topic as a group, or in smaller groups, and most meetings include an interactive component as well. After discussing media messages, the girls broke into groups and cre ated their own TV ads and acted them out for the rest of the group. They also do a hands-on activity at each meet ing during the discussion or the sec ond half of the meeting. The program includes exercises about recognizi ng one s strengths and best attributes, handling peer pres sure, healthy eating habits, hygiene, general wellness, exercise, and iden tifying core values and interests. Depending on the age level of a uniquely ME! group, additional in formation about eating disorders, re lationships, and stress is also covered. In North Carolinasix counties have uniquely ME! program sites — Cumberland, Hoke, Moore, Rich mond, Robeson, and Scotland coun ties. Halfof the sites are middle schools and half are elementary. Some school administrator decide which girls will participate, sometimes by grade level or specifically selected girls counse lors perceive as “at risk.” In Hoke County uniquely ME! consistently serves 75 girls a week. The problem of low self-esteem is pervasive among adolescent girls in the United States. Research conducted by the Girl Scout Research Institute and other organizations demonstrates that risky behavior such as smoking, drinking, unsafe sexual behavior, eat ing disorders, suicidal tendencies and self-mutilative behavior are often as sociated with low self-esteem. Unilever has donated a total of $2.65 million to the 13 program sites across the country and has committed employee volunteer time to the uniquely ME! program. Unilever employees also contrib ute to the program through mentoring activities with Girl Scout troops, par ticipation in annual community ser vice events. For the rest of the meeting, the girls at WHMS present a talent show, and Consuela wraps up the meeting. “I had no idea of the talent in this room,” she says. “I am so proud pf each one of you and I just hope you’ll choose to use your talents wisely.” Legal Advertising NOTICE OF SALE IN THE GENERAL COURT OF JUSTICE OF NORTH CAROLINA SUPERIOR COURT DIVISION HOKE COUNTY 03SP81 IN THE MATTER OF THE FORECLOSURE OF A DEED OF TRUST EXECUTED BY WESLEY BERNARD PARKER DATED OC TOBER 2, 1997 AND RECORDED IN BOOK 377 AT PAGE 251 IN THE HOKE COUNTY PUBLIC REGISTRY, NORTH CAROLINA Pursuant to an order of the Clerk of Superior Court and under and by vir tue of the power and authority con tained in the above-referenced deed of trust and because of default in the payment of the indebtedness thereby secured and failure to carry out and perform the stipulation and agree ments therein contained and, pursu ant todemandof the owner and holder of the indebtedness secured by said deed of trust, the undersigned substi tute trustee will expose for sale at public auction to the highest bidder for cash at the usual place of sale at the county courthouse of said county at tO:(X) AM on Tuesday, June 10,2003 the following described real estate and any other improvements which may be situated thereon, situated in Hoke County, North Carolina, and being more particularly described as follows: All that piece, parcel or lot of land situated, lying and being in HOKE County, NC and known and desig nated as LOT 16, ANDERSON PLACE, SECTION THREE, PART ONE, recorded in Slide 396, Plat 003 of the HOKE County, NC Public Land Records, reference to which is hereby made for a more particular descrip tion.
