Hoke students get help with college selection
Fort Bragg School Liaison Services administers to children of military personnel

cently attended a Shopping for Col
lege workshop held at the Tolson
Youth Activities Center at Fort Bragg.
The Fort Bragg School Liaison
Serv ices program sponsored the work
shop. A team of panelists consisting
of a representative from the College
Foundation of Norih Carolina
(CF NC), a high school guidance coun
selor from L. E. Smith High School,
and admissions repre.sentatives from
Fayetteville Technical Community
College, Fayetteville State Univer
sity and Methodist College provided
information and fielded questions
from the participants.

formation on planning, applying, and
paying for college. Kelly Lockhart,
guidance counselor from E. E. Smith,
elahorated on the NCAA clearing
house and registration requirements
for prospeclive student athletes. Dr.
James Kelley, Director of Admissions
from Fayettev illcTechnical Commu
nity College, addressed the selection
and admissions processes from the
viewpoint of a community college.
Brent I lester, of the Office of Admis
sions from Fayetteville State, dis
cussed the college admissions pro
cess from the perspective of the 16
colleges in the UNC system. Jamie
Legg, Director of Admissions from
Methodist, provided information rel
evant to the 36 private colleges in the
stateof North Carolina and the typical
enrollment and costs involved.
Students were encouraged to reg

They were advised to plan on doing
well and to take challenging courses.
One of the panelists recommended
that they take the college entrance
exams in the spring of the junior year
and again in the fall of the senior year.
The importance of visiting cam
puses was stressed. It w as suggested
that they visit four to six campuses
and to apply for financial aid at every
school they were consideriirg. The

tion. "The process of selecting a
college is very stressful. 'Fhe more
know ledge you recei v e, the less stress
ful the selection process becomes,"
she said.
This workshop was one in a series
of workshops hosted by the School
Liaison Services branch of the Youth
liducation Support Services program.
The next postsecondary opportuni
ties event will be a College Fair and
Financial Aid workshop, scheduled
for November 20 at 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
at the Tolson'Youth Activities Cen
ter.

Robinson-Henderson plan Nov. 29 wedding
Nina Evelyn Davis of Raeford announces the engagement of her
daughter, Minister Flossie D. Robinson, to Leo Henderson Jr. of
Raeford. The bride-to-be is the daughter of the late Ervin Davis. The
groom-elect is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Leo Henderson of New
