Pick berries, beat the reeession The strawberry crop is ripening quickly! Finally we’re getting some sunny weather! Nearly a week of cool nights has had the effect of slowing the crop down, but not as much as you might think! The real issue in the held this year is the “lack of U-pick customers.” Normally, in a reces sion, we tend to think that people have a little more time to pick berries, and “should be” interested in taking advantage of the savings Extension Today Mary Hollingsworth associated with harvesting your own fruit. But maybe the fact that gasoline keeps going up (lately, it seems like 10 cents a day,) is a deterring factor? Or, perhaps people just don’t realize the crop is ready! Picking strawberries is great fun for families, not to mention the great flavor of local berries and just how incredibly easy they are to pick. In a recession, people are looking for the best value for their money, and this is it! This year we should have helds full of people beating the recession blues by picking good tasting, nutritious and very reasonably priced local strawberries. It’s hard to believe, but for the price of a gallon of gas costing $2.80, you can pick several delicious pounds of berries. The flavor has held wonderfully, despite overcast days earher last week. Just imagine how great the quality will be with a few days of sunshine!
