basketball team. She was voted
“Most Well Rounded Girl” in her
graduating class of 1966. She went
on to earn an associate’s degree in
secretarial science from Sandhills
Community College. She married
Ozell Jacobs, a former classmate
and basketball player, and the
couple has two sons, Stephen and
Robert. The family remains active
and Brenda Jacobs is a member
of the Parks and Recreation dance
group. Just Us Plus. Jacobs has
worked in various jobs in the com
munity including with the Hoke
County Public Library and the local
Employment Security Commis
sion. She is also a Notary Public.
She worked with the Lumbee Re
gional Development Association
and became very involved in civic
affairs. She has served on several
committees and boards including
the Hoke County Schools Blue Rib
bon Committee, the Hoke County
Health Department Board, the
Four County Board and the North
Carolina Turkey Festival Board.
She is a charter member and the
first secretary of the Hoke County
Native American Organization and
served four years as the Antioch
Precinct Delegate and chairperson
of the county’s Indian Education
Program. She attends Mt. Elim
Church and currently serves on the
county Board of Elections.
Lorrie Jones
Lorrie Jones was bom at home
on her family ’ s farm in the Rowland
area of Robeson County. While
growing up there, she attended
Union Elementary School and
graduated from Pembroke High
School in 1966. She studied early
childhood education at Pembroke
State University and later earned her
certification in j ob counseling from
North Carolina Central University.
She moved to another family farm in
the Dundarrach community in 1972
withherhusband, Dexter Jones. She
was employed with the Robeson
County school system and became
involved in the Hoke County school
system as a way to support her own
children’s education. She is mother
to Richard, Rebecca and Rhonda.
Jones served on the Indian Educa
tion Board from 1976 until 1993
and held the position of parent com
mittee chairperson for four of those
years. She also served in the youth
department of Dundarrach Baptist
Church for 12 years. She began
working with the Lumbee Regional
Development Association in 1982
and later became employed with
the North Carolina Commission of
Indian Affairs. She also worked in
Hoke County as a counselor with
the Title IV Indian Education pro
gram. Jones has held membership in
the National Association of Indian
Education, the N.C. Department of
Social Services, the N.C. Associa
tion of Rural Minority Women and
the Hoke County Native American
Council. In recent years she has
focused on service in the missions
field as part of the Burnt Swamp
Baptist Association’s Women’s
Missionary Union.

a waiver of taxing unit’s claim for those items. The real estate that is subject to the lien, the name of the person to whom the property is listed for taxes and the principal
amount of the taxes are set out below.
If the taxes remain unpaid, the lien will be foreclosed by the taxing unit and the property sold to satisfy the taxing unit’s claim for taxes.

Charlotte Kelly
Charlotte Kelly was bom and
raised in Connecticut and earned a
degree in business administration.
Early in her career, shetraveledback
and forth between her home and
Philadelphia while working with
an African American newspaper
called the Philadelphia Tribune. In
Philadelphia she met and married
William P. Kelly Sr. The couple had
two sons, William Jr. and Steven
C. Kelly, and moved to Kelly’s
hometown of Raeford in the 1970s.
She worked with the Hoke County
Department of Social Services
until she retired in 2007. Kelly has
served on a number of committees
and organizations including serv
ing two terms as the chairperson
for the Hoke County Democratic
Party She al so served 12 years as an
elected official on the Hoke County
Board of Education. Currently she
is a member of the Hoke County
Civic League and the Hoke County
branch of the National Association
for the Advancement of Colored
People. She is a member of the
Juvenile Justice and Delinquency
Prevention Board and the Partners
in Education Foundation. She
attends Silver Grove Missionary
Baptist Church where she serves
on the Pastor’s Aide Committee and
as Church Deaconess. She is also a
member of the Prince Hall Masonic
family and i s Grand Lecturer for the
15 th District Order of the Eastern
Star, among other roles within the
assembly.
Marie Lowery
Marie Lowery was raised in the
Antioch community and graduated
from Hoke County High School
in 1976. She worked at the county
Clerk of Court’s office for nearly 30
years and retired in 2005. Lowery
was the first Native American
to hold several of the positions
she worked with in the Clerk of
Court’s office, she recalled. She
credited two influential teachers,
Mrs. Wright and Mrs. Taylor, and
her friend Della Maynor for much
of her success. She relied on a sup
port group of friends, family and
God when faced with difficulties.
During her time with the Clerk
of Court’s office, Lowery learned
many new skills and made sure
to pass that knowledge on to her
team in the court system. After
retiring, Lowery took on the role
of caregiver for her mother, who
has Alzheimer’s disease. She also
serves as church secretary at New
Beginning Baptist Church. She is
married to Tony Lowery. She is
the mother of Chris and Colin and
stepmother of Juanita and Wenona.
Marvin Lynne Maxwell
MarvinLynneMaxwellwasbom
in Lumberton and grew up in the
Rowland area of Robeson County.
She graduated from Rowland Fhgh
School in 1971 and married James
NeilMaxwellJr.in 1975. The couple
moved to the Dundarrach area of
Hoke County where they raised their
daughter. Shannon Leshe. Maxwell
worked for the Hoke County school
system and earned a degree from
Womack-SeleniaBusinessCollege.
