By Catharin Shepard Staff writer For the second time in three weeks, Hoke and many other coun ties in North Carolina face severe to the area. Predictions from the National Weather Service (NWS) put the Sandhills in the sights of two ap proaching winter storms set to hit parts of the South this week. Unlike winter storms bringing ice and snow the previous storm several weeks ago, this storm brought with it the poten tial for dumping ice as well as snow on the region, officials said. The first storm reached Hoke late Monday night bringing mostly rain that changed into snow (See SNOW, page 4A) Wastewater plant clears one more hurdle By Catharin Shepard Staff writer After several months of delay due to unforeseen circumstances, the Local Government Commission last week gave unanimous final approval for the new Hoke County wastewater treat ment plant project. A combination of several events slowed down the process of getting to work on the plant. First, the bids for the project came in higher than expected, requiring the county to reexamine the funding. Second, the changes required another visit to the LGC, which typi cally only meets once a month. Addi tionally, the government shutdown last fall put everything on hold for a while as county officials tried to work out the funding changes. Garland Pierce, a Democrat representing District 48, announced he in tends to run for a sixth two-year term in office. “I just want to finish some of the work that I started,” he said. (Catharin Shepard photo) Sheriff first to file By Catharin Shepard Staff writer Four candidates seeking election to county offices have filed to run, according to Board of Elections Director Caroline Shook. Incumbent Sheriff Hubert Peterkin, a Democrat, was the first candidate to file to run for office in the 2014 elec tions when the filing period opened at noon Monday. The position of sheriff is a four-year term. Incumbent county commissioners Tony Hunt and Jean Powell, both Demo crats, filed Monday to run for four-year terms in office. Candidates Harry Southerland, Allen Thomas and Mi chael Lindsay, all Democrats, filed Tuesday to seek office on the county board of commissioners. (See TILING, page 6A) Holliday before graduating. Hoke teen killed during visit to uncle Authorities in South Carolina are searching for a suspect wanted in the shooting death of a Hoke County man who was a soon-to-be father. Johnte Shaheed Holliday, 18, of Raeford was shot and killed last week during an apparent home inva sion at his uncle’s house, according to the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office. The shooting took place on the 6000 block of Furse Road in Summerton, South Carolina. Reportedly, Holliday let two men into his uncle’s home, possibly thinking they were his uncle’s friends, before at least one of the suspects shot him, au thorities said. Holliday suffered two gunshot wounds to his upper body. Holliday was taken to Clarendon Memorial Hospital where he died several hours later. Holliday graduated from Hoke County High School with the Class of 2013. According to his Facebook profile, he was originally from Summerton. Just weeks before his death, Holliday posted a Facebook status with a big smiley face and note of “feeling excited.” (See MURDER, page 6A) Four face charges in prescription fraud case C. Locklear W. Locklear Michaelis Sturdivant Deputies with the Hoke County Sheriff’s Office arrested four people last week in connection with a prescription drug fraud scheme allegedly made pos sible by a nurse who stole a prescription pad. Investigators arrested James Sturdivant, 29, of the 300 block of Poole Road; Wynona Locklear, 29, of the 300 block of Poole Road; Tabitha Michaelis, 36, of the 300 block of New Lane; and ChristianLocklear, 25, of the 300block of Poole Road.
