THE NEWS-JOURNAL Raeford, N.C. Browbin VVJ December 21, 2016 47 Years Ago December 25,1969 The Key Club at Hoke High School collects 10 truckloads of trash from the main highways coming into Hoke County. The Christmas decorations are the best ever, folks tell columnist Sam Morris. “We think that a bouquet should be given to the Chamber of Commerce for the project,” he writes. The candles in the medians on Main Street are the result of a letter to the people who live there. It’s from Talmadge Baker, farm agent, who purchased the candles and sent his North Main neighbors a letter saying, “While visiting a neighboring town recently I learned of a most exciting activ ity which is done at Christmas. The residents of the area light their street by placing candles in paper bags, which are partially filled with sand to keep them in place. This is a custom of light ing the streets of a neighborhood with candlelight to symbolize the bonfires the Shepherds built to light their way to the manger in Bethlehem on the first Christmas Eve. This custom of ‘Lighting the Candles’ is called LUMINARIA, which comes from the Spanish word meaning light.” He suggests a single line of candles along Main to begin the custom. The program allows companies to earn a $2,800 credit against state taxes for each job they create. Ninety families face cuts in welfare aid the first of the year af ter the state cut payments to AFDC recipients. “I will personally see that no stone is left unturned in trying to secure the additional state funds necessary to make up the deficit we are faced with,” says State Social Services Board Chairman John R. Jordan Jr. A high turnout of volunteers turns a two-day job into a one- moming one as the school system The number of working wives in Hoke County continues to in crease. No less than 48.5 percent of married women here leave their homes each day and head for outside jobs. In 1960, that figure was 36.8 percent. Timesaving appliances are credited for this. 25 Years Ago December 25,1991 nnuMe Limited Time only Participating Locations Hwy 55 Raeford • 380 Laurinburg Rd. • (910) 875-1133 •Hardware •Outdoor Equipment •Sporting Goods •Firearms •Mowers *Grills STIHL' I J^bpar.\ YETI I ® ■ J Husqvama lll=> RAEFORD HARDWARE r^BLUE LABEL ^ JP R O G R A Ml 129 N.
