(March 4, 1971) 47 Years Ago March 4,1971 A murder charge against a McCain service station owner is dismissed in district court after witnesses tell their stories one at a time. Judge Joseph Dupree says he finds no probable cause for the murder charge, but says the state can proceed to a grand jury if it wants. The owner, saying he acted in self defense, shot a Greensboro man who had been in a car that stopped at the station. City of Raeford officials apply for a grant to pave and light the Raeford Airport. City Manager John Gaddy says the city is seek ing $119,139 for improvements. A 15-year-oldiskilledonN.C. 211 when the horse he is riding is hit by a truck. Ronnie Locklear, a ninth grader at Hoke High was riding half a mile east of Raeford on Firetower Road beside a school bus, Highway Patrol Sgt. D.L. Minshew says. He failed to stop the horse at N.C. 211 and is hit. The funeral was held Sunday. Winners in the annual Cub Scout Pinewood Derby are (left to right) Robby Shook, Bob Moses and Brian Scarborough. Meanwhile, Hoke County commissioners approve $2,500 for a summer recreation program. The “long argument about letting 18-year-olds vote,” writes columnist Sam Morris, “was passed by Congress, but here in Hoke County if they don’tregister they won’t be able to vote.” Mrs. John Scott Poole, registrar, says very few have registered. “Maybe they will be like the older voters,” Morris writes. “Even if they reg ister they can’t find time to go to the polls and vote. “With the condition of this country today; wars, bombings, drugs, etc. maybe all of us should start taking the issues of the coun try serious. The place to begin is at the ballot boxes. The leaders we elect are the policy makers of the future.” A young deer crashes through the window at the Hoke High School cafeteria Sunday and dies. Glen Wood witnesses the event. He says the deer crossed U.S. 401 between Sandhills Restaurant and the Pure Oil station, narrowly missing Coleman Peterson, who was changing a tire at the station. The deer jumped a hedge by the door, and Wiggins saw glass shatter. Game protector Lin wood Pilkington is called but finds the deer dead in the cafeteria, and estimates it died of exhaustion and loss of blood from a cut on his leg. A businessman says he will hire 10 people and hopefully ex pand to 30 to recycle golf balls. Out of the Rough at 409 E Central Ave is Hoke’s newest business. Doc Scheffler has a five-year lease with the option buy and says he’s “here to stay.” He is a former Army tank operator. The Raeford Kiwanis Club admits its first woman, Jackie Lynch. The vote by the club’s board is unanimous. Red Springs wants local phone service to Raeford. The mayor there says many people with Red Springs addresses actually live in Hoke County. Raeford City Council endorses the idea. 25 Years Ago March 3,1993 The “Cadillac Man,” known for driving his umbrella-equipped lawnmower around Raeford, dies at age 76. City police plan a crackdown on speeding with a new radar united provided by the Gover nor’s Highway Safety Program. The instrument has a range of 4,000 feet, policeman Leonard Wiggins says. The Hoke County Health Department is holding an information session from 6-7 p.m. Eric Johnson, Hoke County Food Inspector and Environmental Specialist, will be conducting the information session at 683 East Palmer St., Raeford. The session is for anyone who is interested in starting a food catering business or current cater ers that do not have a food permit or you just want to know what to expect when soliciting a food caterer. Class objectives: 1. explain the applicable laws and rules governing retail food sales in NC, including the exemptions that exist for non-profit groups; 2. discuss how “catering” can be done legally in NC; 3. explain procedure to follow to begin legal food sales in NC; 4. discuss the list of approved caterers in Hoke County.
