People formerly convicted of a crime who are seeking to get their lives back after serving their time are finding success thanks to support from the Hoke County Reentry Council. The Hoke County Reentry Council held its first Working Smart Soft Skills for Workplace Success class on January 13. Three of the five clients enrolled in the program were able to complete the class and received their certificates, and are currently ready for work and on to bigger and better things. Coordinator Bernice McPhatter, case manager Shakina Shaw and teacher Ms. Goins led the class. The Hoke County Reentry Council launched last September for those individuals who were and are still justice-involved. The need for this entity was sorely lacking and once again the call was answered by Ms. Ophelia Ray, the CEO of Maggie’s Out reach Community Economic Development Center. The Hoke County Reentry Council believes that “we can improve our commu nity and meet our goal of reducing recidivism and victimization.” The mission of this organization is to facilitate the collaboration of community resource groups to develop a plan and strategy for effective integration of ex offenders, thereby reducing recidivism, supporting victims and promoting public safety in Hoke County. The Hoke County Reentry Council office is located at 109 North Main Street in Raeford. The office has been busy since its inception and is steadily pro gressing to make a difference in the lives of those who wish to become productive citizens and make better lives for themselves and their families. The Hoke County Reentry Pro gram is housed under the Breaking Every Chain Resource Center, and is still seeking organizations to sign a Memorandum of Agree ment (MOA) to assist in providing services to the program’s clients. Anyone interested in finding out more can contact the program at HokeCounty. reentry @ gmail .com or call (910) 565-2299. While a meeting set in Hoke County hasn’tbeenscheduled yet, the first meeting in Cumberland County is coming up Thursday, February 27 from 6:30-8 p.m. That meeting is open to the public and will take place at the E.E. Miller Recreation Center, located at 1347 Rim Road in Fayetteville. The counties of Cumberland and Hoke, in coordination with participating municipal jurisdic tions, are updating a regional haz ard mitigation plan that covers the two-county area, according to a press statement from Cumberland County Emergency Management Coordinator Hendrix Valenzuela. The Cumberland Hoke Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan identi fies local policies and actions for reducing risk and future losses from natural hazards such as floods, severe storms, wildfires, and winter weather. “At the meeting, we invite the community to participate by shar ing thoughts and comments about the Cumberland-Hoke Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan,” Valen zuela said in the press statement. The teams are looking for citi zen input on what could help make Hoke and Cumberland counties safer from natural hazards. For instance, one thing that came out of the previous plan was a need for emergency management to place more “High Water” warning signs around the county in places prone to flooding during times of heavy rain to better warn drivers, Hoke County Emergency Management Coordinator Jacobs said. There will be a meeting held in Hoke County in the future for citizen input, once a date is set. The meeting February 27 is only the first in the series of meetings.
