Advertising is an invest ment and newspaper advertising col umns are n boon to man. They help him out of his troubles and into the smiles of prosperity. The Pennsylva nia railroad advertises exclusively in the newspapers. There is not a great business that has baen built in the past twenty years without the aid oi nevvxpa pers. This a. is too hustling and coin Spoils ill for volunteers. The government crop report issued dav before yesterday says; The weather was especially favorable for hai vesting in the principal grain states. About the normal temperature pre vailed over the greater portion of the cotton region and the reports indicate petition is too great for the merchant that the cotton crop has greatly iinprowu during the week, except in to allow himself any longer the luxury of waiting supinely behind his conn- ; ter for trade. He must show in ad- vanc.e of the purchase just vh:it,,he has to sell and how he intends to sell , it, and a persistent publication of his i wares is the means by which such i showing can be made, j Frank Siddall, the Philadelphia soap man, says: "1 have c.ouliued my advertising entirely to newspaper. The man who does not read a news paper does not use soap." The convention of the Christian en deavor societies, that began at Cleveland yesterday, represents a membership of nearly 2.000.0W). The lirst cotton picking of the season is re ported from southern Tews. The rainfall has been greater than usual from the south Atlantic it-oast west ward to Texas and Indian territory. The rainfall was much greater than usual along the Carolina coast and over the lower Mississippi valley. The week was unusually dry generally throughout the northwest and the I upper Mississippi valley, and drought conditions are reported from Iowa and the upper .Missouri valley, although crops are not generally injured. Al- I though the week has been dry through out the great western corn belt, this crop continues in the good condition previously reported. , Military authorities in congress con template urging at an early day an ! iucrease'iu the standing army to 3U- 000. Then he charged the socialism and anarchism in this country to the policy of pro tection which brought over too many immigrants, Before adjourning for a vacation, the Lexow committee in New York had testimony clearly implicating one police commissioner, two police in spectors, seventeen police captains, three detective sergeants, three ser geants, thirty-three "ward men" or "pantatas," and thirteen other offi cials connected with various city de partments. The committee will re sume, work early in the fall. Massachusetts has a law requiring the publication of a statement of elec tion expenses. It seems that the cost in the state of the national election in 1892 was $500,000, and that a number of candidates contributed from $7, 000 to $13,000 each. According to the re turns $85,000 was spent in torchlight processions, $50,000 for naturalization of voters, and $30,000 for carriage hire. A law passed this year will pre vent any further expenditures in Mas sachusetts for the naturalization of voters. From these figures in one state the aggregate cost of a presidential campaign in all the states may be figured up. Our long presidential campains cost even more than this in directly by their general effect on business. The question of having short campaigns is a good text for debate.' . AFRAID OF WITCH DEVILS. Avery Lawrence Scared Nearly Out of His , Life He Thinks He is Tricked. A case of genuine witch or conjure scare can now be seen at Capt. J. M. Davis", near Sugar creek, says the Charlotte News. Avery Lawrence, a colored man of family, lives on Capt. Davis farm and has always done re markably well in making a living. A few days ago. though, a strange negro made his appearance in the neighbor hood, and was from the start eyed with suspicion by the negroes of the settlement. Some said he was a rascal, others said he was a tricker, and still others who said there was something strange about the man, they knew not what. In the course of a few days, Avery Lawrence and the strange negro h id a dispute and quarreled agood deal When they parted the stranger made the remark that: "I'll have you and your wife so that you can't move hand or foot in a short time." Everything went along smoothly until Sunday a week ago when Avery went to his oat Held to get some sheaf oats to feed his horse on. When he tore down one of the shocks he found a little bag con taining cotton sticks, roots, bones and some kind of white powder. Avery gave back in fright, He had stumbled on his enemy's trick-box, he thought. He took the "jack" and gave it to Dr. Hunter and asked him to "analyze'' it. Lawrence has become weak and sick; He is going from bad to worse through sheer fright, nothing else. Unless he becomes convinced to the contrary he will die from the effects of the conjure idea, for he is now rapidly heading towards the grave. : All Free.
