(J.iod advertising consists in the se lection of a few strong, quick sell spe cialties, to stand as the representatives of your stock in price, pattern mid quality. No tradesman ueed lack for specialty. Let specialties sell staplss always and try to take rank among your competitors as one who isihe quickest to recognize a -(nod thing and the tirst to sell it. luvite patrons to come and see you. The treat advertisers of the country never cease reminding the people of their names, location and nature of business. Advertising is an invest ment and newspaper advertising col umns are a boon to man. The.y help hi in out of his troubles and into the smiles of prosperity. The Pennsylva nia railroad advertises exclusively in the newspapers. There is not a great business that has baen built in the past twenty years xithout the aid of newspapers. Thisatt is too bustling and com petition is too srreat for the merchant to allow himself any lodger the luxury of waiting supinely behind his coun ter for trade. He must show in ad vance of the purchase just what he has to sell and how he intends to sell it, and a persistent publication of his wares is the means by which such showing can be made. Frank Siddall, the Philadelphia soap man, says: "I have confined my advertising entirely to newspapers. The man vvh does uot read a news t -.Vr does U' t use soap." Arbitr.i ... between the presideut and the MMiMe is the great ut'ed of the country at this time. The south will reach out after Cen tral and South .American trade. In New Orleans the Spanish language will be taught, hereafter in the high schools. News comes from Atlanta that the "Cotton States Exposition" is being organized with great spirit and en ergy. Only a few months have elapsed since the scheme was in its ineipiency, but it is already on the highway to success. What is claimed to have been the fastest long-distance freight-run ever made in this country was made from Memphis' to Kansas City by a special train loaded with bananas, the speed averaging 40.4 miles an hour for the 484 mileB, and reaching a maximum of 64 miles an hour, which was kept up for six honrs. A new judge, a, Tillmanite, takes his seat on the supreme bench in South Carolina in a few days, and Tillman Haiti in a speech at Charleston last week : "I'm going to ram the dispensary down your throats with the constable and the militia and the metropolitan police, and you'll have to stand it whether you want to or not." Presidents Jefferson, Jackson and Gi'ant wvre guilty, on one ortwo oc casions, of "dictation" to congress on the same line. as Cleveland's, and the country applauded them for it. The "dictation," however, was not on a matter in which there was a conflict between the two branches of congress. The principle was the same, though. Cleveland has the country on his side in this wrangle. The English language grows rapidly these days. New American words are usually due to the national sense of humor, or spring up spontaneously. The latest Americanisms are "pan tata," which -is Bohemian for "big father," applied by the Bohemians of , New York to the Tammany ward man who collects blackmail and dispenses special privileges;" and "rickey," a new Washington beverage christened after a Missouri colonel. It is made of limes, two pieces of ice and fizzing water, together with the customer's xvfavorite amount of whiskey, measured by himself, . At Canton it is estimated that 6,000 deaths front the black death" r plague have occurred. At that city a notel and thoroughly Chinese method of checking the disease hit upon. A fortune teller having given out that the plague would die away with the approach of the spring solstice, the people of I'alitoii, 'n order to deceive the gods of sickness, made the first of the fourth moon (May 5) their new year's day. Kvery rereiuony by which the day is cele brated was gone through with scrupu lous exactitude. The local authorities assisted in this farcical performance. The New Year's festivities in the presence of such widespread death had a somewhat ghastly character. The eyes of the world are turned towards Coiva. The ancient name of that country means "the land of morn ing calm." No reason exists why its colmness should be greatly disturbed, for war in its neighborhood will mean only a change of masters. China h:is landed 12.000 troops there and Japan has some 10,IX)0 on hand. Behind China aud Japan are Russia and ling laud, and the 18.000.000 Coreans may as well accept results quietly, watch ing the coining war only as spectators. It is snid that Japan declared its in dependence of China a long time ago because the mother country tried to compel the Japs to wear queus and to dress according to edict.. The Japs and Chinese have been enemies for 200 years, and have been getting ready to light it out for a long time. The Japs at least have uo queus to lose at close quarters. Their army is modern in dress, drill and equipment. BLOCKADING UNDER GROUND. How an Old Revenue Violator Attempted to Outwit the Government oilicers. Asheville, N. C. July 26. It was reported a year ago that a large chest nut tree in the Pisgah range that was green and in perfect health emitted smoke, as if it was on fire at the base or inside. The vent was at the top of the tree. Several parties dug around the tree, but there appeared to be no hollow under it and it was firmly root ed. The smoke was generally seen at night and early in the morning. No explanation was found for the phe aoinenon, and it passed as a nine days' wonder. A. H. Vanderford, special revenue agent, came here on business, and, .of course, was told of the smok ing tree. Next day he returned, and carried a long, pointed iron. He cir eled around the tree, at each round extending the circle and prodding every foot of ground. After a hard day's work he returned without solv ing the mystery. He went out a third time and did as before, and when about 100 yards from the tree thought h detected something in the ground ihat was not natural. The next night, he was again at the smoking tree with six revenue officers. They drew a cor don around the tree in a circle about 100 yards from its base. As soon as it became light the smoke was in full blast. Vanderford then began to prod at the place he left off, in a straight' direction from the tree, and when he came to hollow ground he stopped. His men then began to dig with picks and shovels, and soon came to a tunnel.. Gathering their carbines they entered the tunnel and proceeded cautiously toward the tree. They found a large excavation, in which there was a block ade still running at full capacity. Old Amos Owens, the most incorrigible revenue violator in this state, and who has been convicted and sent to the Albany penitentiary several times for blockading, was sitting down asleep. Vanderford touched him on the shoul der and Amos awoke, and seeing who it was, for he knew Vanderford well, said - "I supposed you would find me out after awhile. I knew you were pros pecting around here." All Free. Those who have used Dr King's New Dis covery know its value, and thiee who have not, have now the opportunity to try it free.
