A strange and fatal disease has at tacked horses and cows in Halifax and Northampton, and in other sec tions of the state. Several prominent citizens at Garysburg have recently lost valuable horses, and the Weldon News says some farmers hae lost both horses and cows. There appears as yet no cure for the disease and the animals die soon after being attacked. THE NAVAL BATTLE. A Graphic Description of the First Great Encounter ol Modern Vessels. Last Monday the Chinese fleet. eo sising of 16 war ships, convoying transports with six thousand troops on board, arried off the mouth of the Yalu river, in Corea. Itlwas the in tention of admiral Ting to disembark these troops in order to form a force to intercept the Japanese advance upon Manchuria, from which there is a railroad running to Tien Tsin. While engaged in landing troops a fleet of 10 Japanese war ships, accom panied by a flotilla of torpedo boats, was sighted. As soon as they were within range the Japanese attacked the- Chinese. Then followed a terrible contest, last ing six hoars, duriug which the great guns, trapid-fire guns and machine guns of all sorts were used with fear ful effect on both sides. Both fleets also used torpedoes repeatedly, and fired at each other contiuously from the rapid-fire guns mounted in the tops of the different war ships. The Chen Yuen, flagship of tin Chinese squadron, a monster of 740 tons displacement with fourguns, each loaded with a 724 pound projectile, jiwas first to open fire. Though the Chen Yuen herself, under the personal command of admiral Ting, had armor but twelve inches thick, her largest guns had a perforating power, when fired with 202 pounds of .powder ea.-h, sufficient to pierce through 21 1-2 in ches of the best armor plate. She also belched away with terrific des tructive power from three torpedo tubes and numerous machine guns on deck and in the tops. Arrayed against her were Japanese war ships of about the same size and armament. One of the latter is supposed to have been the splendid up-to-date cruiser Chyo da. When these two battle ships, and all the others on both sides suitable to enter such an- engagement, had got fairly down to their terrific work, the struggle was such a one as has never before been waged. Guns which had proved by , infalible tests that their projectiles could pierce thicker armor than any now arrayed against them were puncturing each others side's almost from the very outset of the six hours' battle. Only the results of the disastrous and deadly fire can as yet be given. Admiral Ting's flagship, the Chen Yuen, a match for some of the best vessels in British navy, was sunk; the admiral was severely wounded or elain; the great battle ship King Yuen was burned, and 600 officers and men on board of it were drowned. Only a few of the men struggling in the water were picked up. The Chen Yuen, after fighting her guns to the last, was sank by torpedoes, and a smaller Chinese vessel, which was un armed, was blown up. FACTS FROM ABROAD. The March of Advanced Science Throughout the World. AND ITS VALUE TO US. A Declaration Made by the Great Doctor Fothergill for the Benetil uf the Peo ple of the World Hjs Aromed Much Attention. LosiHix, E.xu., September. The fol lowing statement made by the late Dr. J. Sliluer Fothergill, the eminent scientist, who was physician for the London hospital for diseases of the chest, has made quite a sensation. After denouncing oils aud similar sub stiuceswhen used as food, he said: Fatty, oily foods isnnot be taken by those whose stomachs are weak or whose digests e organs are out of or der. What food should such people hive? 1 say they need food which acts as a strengtbener and su.stainer as fuel to feed the lamp of life, and that is starch food. A soluble star.h food which will be readily assimilated by the digestive organs is the food for people whose digestive organs are weak." It was only natural that such a PR. J. M1LXER FOTHEKUILL. statemeut, coming from so high an authority, should have made a pro found impression among the leading physicians aud scientists of Europe, and it brings into special prominence the recent discovery of pre-digested starch food known to doctors, to scien tists and the world as Paskola. Com paratively few people outside the highest mediral circles know of this wonderful discovery, but it is known to possess the qualities of flesh-forming, strength-imparting, life-giving power which has never been known before in the history of the world. Tests have been made upon patients in a weak, pale, run-down condition, accompanied with indigestion and general loss of energy, and there suits are truly remarkable. It really looks as though this newly discovered food, Paskola, will take its rank as the most efficient flesh-producer and cure for dyspepsia of the nineteenth o 'ntury. It is certainly superseding od liver oil and the fatty prepara tions which have been used so exten sively, and this but confirms the wis, dom of the judgment of those who predicted for it unequaled success. In tli e treatmenytii' disease, as in all else, "The proof or' the pudding is in eating." The Uev . A. F. Beebe, of vVorth Center, N.' Y is but one of Thousands who have been benefited by this ingenious and valuable prepara tion. He writes, under date of April 14, 1394, as follows: "1 can truly say it is a pleasure to tjive to the world a testimonial in re gard to Paskola, for it has certainly accomplished wonders for myself and wife. We have taken $4. 50 worth: less than the price of one visit from our physician, and it has done for us what, no doctor's prescription or pat ent medicine has ever done. For twenty-five years I have suffered un told miseries through a disordered stomach. For years I have had to ab stain from meats, but after one dose of Paskola have eaten meat or any other food my appetite craved, with no evil results. "In regard to my wife 1 hardly know how to write. It certainly ap pears like a miracle. Months passed with her with no appetite, and so re duced iu flesh and vitality was she that we were looking for nothing short of a speedy death. But Providence appeared in the shape of a little pamphlet tucked under the string of a package brought from a neighbor iug town and by me tossed upon the table with the remark, 'Here, wife, is something to cure your ills and give you an appetite.' She read it, aud said to me. 'I have faith to believe that if I had that Paskola it would help me.' The next day I secured a bottle, and she began taking it. That was four weeks ago. Today she can ; at anything she craves, something hi has not before done in months. "I regret we did not weigh ourselv es before we began to take Paskola, but the truth is that I had no great faith in it, so many things had failed, but you have won our lasting gratitude You can make such use of this testi monial as you wish. I send it for the simple reason that I have the good of my fellow men at heart." Such words as these carry convict ion, - A pamphlet fully describing Pasko la and what it does, will be Bent free to any address by the Pre-digested Food Co., Reade st., New York.
