Raleigh Merchants Make Good Displays Four Thousand People Present. 1 Yesterday's shower came in good time and laid the dust and gave fair weather for the opening day of the fair. For once there ran be no com plaint about the weather. Let the peo ple give thanks. The opening was one of the best in the history of the exhibition ; the crowd was large and the exhibits in better shape. All the elliil its are ly no means ready as yet but tomorrow will see the " great fair," which is the only appropriate name for the exhi bition, fairly launched. The pro gramme today was carried out on time iu all its particulars, except the bal loon ascension. The populate, how ever, has learned by experience that this feature is never on time so no one was disappointed. At 11 oMock Col. Julian S. Carr, the president of the agricultural soci ety introduced Gov. Klias Carr who formally opened thefairin a strong and vigorous speech. He was followed by Prof. KJwin A. Alderman of (lie univer sity, who introduced D '. J.L.M. Ci i-ri-. He respond, d in an exce 'eni address o tl.e e 'iii'iitors of the state." A splcii'l il l iasn band furnished good music fur i iii' occasion. One of the pretty features of the opening was the "Old North State," sung by 400 school children from the Mnrphey and Centennial graded schools. The marshals arrived at the grounds about 11:30 o'cloek and presented a line appearance. It is the generally expressed opinion that the rosettes v, it h which the marshals are ladged this year are great im provements on the old style regalias. The exhibits are nearly all ready and are the finest ever seen in the state, the exposition not excepted. It is a pleasure to see the liberal man ner in which Raleigh merchants and and industries are helping on the fair and themselves by putting in tasteful and costly exhibits. Numbers of them have exceedingly creditable exhibits, but, the local spaces of Messrs. W. H. & R. S. Tucker & Co.,V. H. King & Co., and Julius Lewis & Co. deserve special mention. Messrs. W. H. & R. S. Tucker & Co. have one of the finest exhibits ever seen at an exhibition here. It is situated in the extensi in of the main building just beyond the rotunda of the old floral hall. It con sists of a-handsome booth about thirty feet in length and filled with as beau tiful and tastily arranged display as it is possible to conceive. Just xippo posite to this space the firm has erected, in the aisle, a handsome and costly pagoda like structure about fourteen feet in height. The sides are of the finest plate glass and within is a display of ladies gowns robed oil figures. One of the features is an ex ellent wax figure of a young lady dressed in a dainty evening costume. This is an "eye-catcher" and an ad miring crowd (an aLvays be seen hanging around the exhibit and gazing open-mouthed at the wax beauty. Julias Lewis & Co's. exhibit is situ ated just opposite Tucker's and also attracts '.; universal attention. It is filled with an excellent and well arranged Exhibit of hardware. - Messrs. W. H. King & Co..have one of the neatest and best arranged spaces in the building. It is simply a com plete drugstore filled with the finest attributes of such an establishment. The cases and toilet articles are es pecially handsome. . , The Raleigh cotton mills and the Caraleigh phosphate works have both put in excellent exhibits. The midway was in fall blast today and the exhortations and thundering ad dresses of the proprietors of the side sho A'S gave the sight-seer a bewildering and pleasureable sense of excitement. Although there are some "fakes", among the shows, they are, as a class, better and more honestly conducted than ever before. Among tho-e that are worth the price of admission and are really interesttng and instructive Wombwell's menagerie of trained wild inimals and the clyclorama of Gettys burg staud head and shoulders over the other "midway" attractions. A curious thing is that the ever-present, up to this time, merry-go-round or ""spinning jennie" is not among the "midway " attractions. Racing commenced at 1 o'clock to day and promised to be of a high order. Three races were on the card, two 3 minutej3lass trotting races and a. running heat race for two year oldsi The balloon finally got off and sailedj away followed by the admiring eyes of the multitude. ' The fair is undoubtedly the great est ever held by the agricultural so ciety and the thanks of the state are doe to it energetic president and sec retary. . Civil Court. Court convened this morning at the nsual hour, Judge Bynum presiding. No business of any importance was disposed of and court shortly ad- Joarned. THE PROGRAMME. The University and Trinity college football teams will meet on the "grid iron" field tomorrow afternoon at Chapel Hill. The game will probably be the most interesting and exciting struggle of the kind ever seen in the state. . Trinity has by far the heavier team and her men are nearly all vet eran players. The University team, however, is especially well trained and it is this on which the backers of the "white and blue" base'their hopes of the University winning. The odds are on Trinity but as an athletic "tar heeler" says "the University will play a cracking, good, bard, snappy game." ' . j : v.. An Attractive' Store.
