The new governor of South Carolina
is only 31, the attorney general 25,
and the adjutant general 24.
The Cruiser Raleigh left Norfolk
yesterday for Newport, R. I., to re
ceive her i-omplimeut of torpedoes,
preparatory to joining the North At
lantic squadron.
A letter has been received from an
American in Turkey, stating that the
authorities have closed all the col
leges in Armenia, and have iinpris
prisoned 35 American professors.
The Pennsylvania railroad Is about
to follow the lead of the railroads in
New England which have substituted
electricity for steam on their short
branch lines because of the cheapness
of the former motive power.
A cyclone struck Covington, Tenn..
early yesterday morning and blew off
the top of the court house and demol
ished a dozen residences, a score of
barns and out-houses. The darage
was 50,000. No lives were lost.
From Tokio, Japan, it is learned
that, in accordance with instructions
from secretary Gresham, Edwin Dunn
the American minister, has informed
the Japanese government that ex-secretary
John V. Foster has undertaken
his peace mission for China entirely
on his own responsibility as far as the
Washington government is concerned.
A New York court has decided that
when a passenger drops a nickel on
the floor of a street car, it pays his
fare the same as if handed to the con
ductor, and that in the case of a larger
coin, the conductor must give him the
proper change. The theory of the
decision is that the company owns the
car, and a coin dropped accidentally is
therefore in its custody.
Ex-captain Dreyfus, the French
officer convicted of treason, has been
forbidden to speak to any one during
his confinement, and orders have been
given not to answer him if he does
speak, or to speak to him. These
orders will remain in force till he
reaches New Caladonia, so that he is
condemned to silence for three months.
His wife is with him. New Caladonia
is a penal colony. He is to remain
there for life.
The entire second brigade of the
Btate of New York, nearly 3,000 strong,
was ordered on duty Saturday, to
preserve order in the great street car
strike, but failed to restore order
that day. The troops responded with
surprising promptness to the call.
They performed guard duty at the de
pots of th trolley lines and relieved
the police, but the latter were not
able to prevent the mobbing of cars
and assaults upon employees at other
points. Trolley wires were cut, motors
disabled, green men stoned and mal
treated and other disturbances were
kept up with nearly the same disre
gard for the authorities that has pre
vailed all the week. The street car Co.
failed to make good their promise to
operate all lines afforded protection.
Attempts at opening new lines were
attended with slight success, owing
to lack of capable men and to the de
termined opposition of the strikers at
points not covered by police or troops.
The troops behaved admirably. All
the second brigade am Brooklyn
troops. Saturday night an order .was
pwued by brigade! general Fitzgerald,
of the first brigade, of New York city,
4,800 strong, ordering alt members to
their armories to prepare for ftVld
duty. The greater portion of the
members of the brigade answered at
once to the call, and at midnight were
waiting for orders to mote to Brook
lyn. Women of the worst visits are
aiding the strikers in ariou ways.
Their behavior is as bad as that of
the men.
The three women who are memoirs
of the Colorado legislature are Mrs.
Francis Klock and Mrs. Clara Cres
singham. They are said to be acredit
to their sex in the way they acc-pt
heir unique situation. They took
the oath of office with dignity, and
with far more ease than some of the
youthful masculine legislator. They
were not overcome when their brethren,
in a spirit of jocularity, appointed
them a committee to escort the new
speaker to the chair. They are self
possessed and very watchful. Tbey
sit quietly behind their big desks
from the time the speaker's gavel calls
them to order until it is time to go
home. They are quiet enough to suit
the most fastidious clamorer for peace,
but what they will be after they find
out the style of doing business no one
will venture to guess. All men are
willing to leave well enough alone and
take their chances on the future.
A MISSOURI SLAUGHTER.
The Terrible Result ot an Old Fend One
Dead and One Fatally Injured.
Louis Banker is dead, Philip Ger
man is dying, W. J. Gillham fatally
injured and Andrew Welch shot This
is the result of a shooting affray at
Mitchell, near St. Louis. Banker and
Gillham went to a saloon. Tbey met
Joseph Hank. A grudge had existed
between these and was renewed on
sight. The quarrel resulted in a
fight, during which Gillham was
floored. Hank walked into the sa
loon and Banker followed. Banker
was given a pistol by Gillham. When
he went into tbe saloon he backed
against the bar, and, holding his re
volver in a threatening attitude, he
looked defiantly at those about and
shouted:
"The first man who comes near will
be killed." I
Banker acted likea madman. Philip
German, a blacksmith, was drunk, but
admonished Banker to "put away that
gun." Banker warned everybody to
"stand back."
German reeled over toward Banker,
who shot ; him through the neck, in
flicting a fatal wound. German fell
and Banker would have shot him
again had not fllrs. Martin, the saloon-keeper's
wife, prevented him.
Banker attempted to shoot Mrs. Mar-'
tin, and wonld have succeeded had not
Andrew Welch prevented this by grap
pling with the infuriated man. Welch
was shot in the arm. He feigned
death, and to this he owes his life.
Banker, thinking he had killed two
men, was either overcome with the
appalling aspect of the case or was
seized with,contrition and remorse. He
ruhed out on the porch where he
placed the revolver to his temple and
sent a bullet crashing through his
brain. He died in half an hour.
German and Mrs. Martin walked
oat to where Gillham lay in the hall
way. They presumed Gillhnm was
responsible for the ghastly work of
Banker, and set npon him and gave
him such a beating that his death is
momentarily expected.
