Various publishing companies were j represented, the university publish ing company, by J. C. L. Harris; American book company, by D. L. Russell and F. II. Busbee; Giun & Co., by T. R. Purnell and W. N. Junes. This is the firm which Is urging a change of the law. E. G. Harrell made a statement that the change of the law proposed by the bill would cost an average of one dollar per child attending public schools, or for Wake county aloue f 15,000, or 300,000 for the state, if all the counties make the change. This afternoon the committee will probably finish hearing the argument and reach a decision by tomorrow. i It is understood that the committee will report favorably on the bill. The wires are broken down. Erank Fuller, a negro, was sent to jail last evening by a magistrate. He is charged with " misdemeanor," a very flexible term. In the house thia morning a favora ble committee report was mada on the bill to provide for special tax collec tors for Wake county. Maud Durand, who last season was the leading support of Madame Mod jeska is now playing ITstane in Pear son's great production. Ca ptain Williamson's horse sale will be held tomorrow at Yancey's stables. There will be fifty-one line, blooded horses put under the hammer. Late yesterday afternoon Mr. A. W. Graham, of Oxford, was tendered the vacant judgeship, just as the Visitor said. He has not yet accepted. Edwin Browne, the leading man of Peartou's "She" company, though still a young man, has- made three tours of the world in a professional capacity. One drunk who was found flound ering helplessly about in the snow last evening was tried by mayor Bad ger this mpring and given a 12 hours rest in the station house. The Southern railroad will sell round trip tickets at greatly reduced prices. The sale commences on Feb. 16 and closes the 21. The tickets will be good until the 2Cth. The trains were generally delayed today b"y the snow. It is reported that in some cuts on the railroads the snow has blown and drifted into dritts to a depth of over 3 1-2 feet. The six per cent interest bill will be sent back to the house tomorrow morn ing from the judiciary committee to which it was re-referred yesterday. Workmen were preparing it for occupancy this morning. Complaints are heard that the wa ter used at the centenial graded school is very bad. It is said that the teach ers will not drink it. School children are not so cautious, however, and the water might cause disease. The matter should be attended to. This morning in the senate Mr. "You-see-by-nsV Sigmon was plead ing for a pension for an old impover ished confederate soldier. He was interrupted by senator Moody, who asked if he owned a grist mill and if the old soldier ever came there. : He replied in the affirmative. The storm yesterday central off the south Atlantic coast has moved with great rapidity along the coast to New England, increasing intensely. The pressure is generally low on the Atlantic coast, and high with a moderate told wave west of the Mis sissippi river the conditions are favorable for the continued flow of air from west to east so that the tem perature will rise slowly in this vicin ity, the nights will continue cold for sometime. Had it snowed last night the cars would have been kept going all night, to keep the track clear. In anticipation of this several motomen and conductors were sent to bed at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon to prepare for night work. What came near being a serious ac cident occurred on Blount street last night. An improvised sleigh, a goods box on runners, filled with half a dozen revellers upset and spilled its contents. One of the runners broke and this caused the break down. The occupants unfortunately fell in soft, deep snow and were uninjured. This morning in the Yarboro house judge Battle heard an appeal in the Gilmer case. Lawyers Manly and Watson came from Winston yesterday, passed through to Kinston, caught judge Battle there and brought him here where their opponents are. They had been delaying the case. It as quite a bit of legal enterprise. At 4:10 this afternoon, a horse, hitched to a buggy dashed widly down Fayetteviile street. No one was in the buggy. The horse ran on until he came to Stnebank's bar when he made a dash for the door. The buggy caught but the horse went on in, great ly to the surprise to those who were taking "grip" preventatives inside. Graham, of Oxford, as the Visitor said would be the case, was tendered the appoint ment of judge to sivceed judge Win ston, resigned, by Gov. Carr. He immediately left the city for Littleton toswe his brother, Maj. John W. Gra ham, of Hillsboro. This morning he accepted the appointment. Judge Graham is one of the best lawyers in his section and will make an excellent judge. There is some sur prise expressed that he instead of Maj. Graham, should have been ap pointed. It is said that Maj. Graham was the choice of his district for the place, as judge Winston's resigniation was known to be coming long before it was made public. .
