News eomes today from Sitka Alaska, that diamonds of splendid brilliancy bave been found in the lava beds on the sides of Mount KJgeromDe The readiness of Chinese generals and admirals to commit suicide after a disaster adds to the difficulty of nn derstandin-T what war means to the Mongolian mind. From tbe recent statistics it is shown that the ratio -of deaf mutes in the world is one to one thousand six hun dred people. There are upward of forty thousand such unfortunates in the Tnited States; one million in the world. The possibilities of a rapid growth of manufacturing in the south are in stanced in the recent history of the old town of Tampa, Fla. Ten years ago, when the population was about a thousand, the first cigar factory was established. ' According to the estimate of the senate committee on' education and labor, the strikes during the past six wars-have involved losses aggregating $93,556,859; nd it is impossible to see that the labor problem has been in the least degree simplified by the enormous expenditure. The custom receipts are interesting as compared with those of last year, and it seems likely that the revenue will come up to the necessities of the government within the next two or three months. Such a charge would do more than anything else to solve the financial problem. Tampa, Florida, has grown to such an extent, especially during the last two years, that the population is now 17,000. The tobacco factories emp loy over 5, 000 operatives, and the aggre gate of their product is $6,500,000. Tampa is the nearest railway point to Havana, a fact that has much to do with its recent development. The wrecking of the bank of Lex ington by cashier Figgatt emphasizes the public Aemand for some method of securing depositors and other creditors of the banks. It also shows how easily a trusted officer can line his pockets or waste a bank's assets with out being ' called to account by the officials upon whom the people deal ing with the bank rely for production Twenty-five thousand letters at the bottom of the sea !
