Death ime to the suf fering little body late Saturday after noon, the day after it had been mal treated by its unnatural father. The burial took place yesterdiy afternoon in the old cemetery. Mrs. Gorman and Maxwell Gormau were both prea eut at the services at the grave which were conducted by the Rev. Dr. Car ter. Dr. J. W. McGee made out the burial permit ai:d assigned the t-ause of death as meuiugetis. The little child died at its borne. That of the dead . hild or of its living father? Mrs. Gorman states that no injury was done to Mr. Gorman's little child. He was arrested, Mrs Gorman says be es use she feared he might do the child unintentional injury. Mr. Gorman has decided to give up intoxicant, and inteuds to lead a new life, which his friends sincerely hope he may do. Some mouths since the board of aldermen ordered that all liquor saloons b- placed in the front part of the buildings occupied by them, ('apt. Fisher, of the Benbow house, has a very elegant saloon attached to his hotel. He eloped it rather than r.'.no e it lo the front of the hotel. Yesterday morning at 9 o'clock the lire alarm rung from box 34. The lire was in the residence of Mrs. Scar let. The damage, estimated by a fire man, was 15 cents. An interesting sight seen on the streets today was a big whiskey dis tillery beingliauled to the revenue office. It was formerly a terpentine still but had been adapted to different uses. At 8:30 o'clock last evening Edith Isabella Kvans, the infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John W Evans, died at the age of 19 months The funeral will take place from the residence tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock. Friends are invited to attend. Last nighttht.e was a lively "scrap" between the telegraph operator at the Caucasian office and a printer on the same paper, named Goldsmith. Gold smith is a cripple and uses crutches, but he put up a game fight, anyway. Hev. Dr. Burwell has been at death's door during the day. At 9 o'clock this morning he was thooght to be unable to live through the day. At 3 o'clock this afternoon he was still alive, but sinking. Tomorrow the supreme court de cisions will be handed down and the fate of George Mills will be settled, in all probability. Then one will hear no more of George, except perhaps a no tice of his violent death. Superior court met and adjourned today. That is the whole story. The case of Yancey vs. Stronach was on the calendar but i postponement till tomorrow was agreed to. The motion docket will be called tomorrow at 2 o, clock. The Isabella circle of King's Daugh ters will on Tuesday evening give an entertainment in the parlors of the Park hotel. The program will con sist of tho best instrumental and vo cal music by Raleigh talent. The la dies earnestly invite all favorable to the cause to attend. Yesterday Noah Wilson, in the heat of passion, struck a colored man named Wilcox, on the head with a pair of heavy tongs. This morning he was committed to jail for assault with a deadly weapon. He says Wil cox abused him beyond measure. At the meeting of the county com missioners held today cotton weighers were elected. They are P, W, Doud and J. W. Pear, elected by the com missioners, and T. M. Richardson and R. G, Dunn, by the cotton engrossers exchange. This morning there arrived here a committee of Wilmington's citizens, who are visiting here to take steps to prevent, if possible, the change of their city's charter by the legislature They are some of that city's most progressive . citizens. Their names may be seen in the personal column Yesterday some trivial changes of schedule went into effect ou the South ern railroad. The ' 6:40 train to Greensboro now leaves at 5:20. The train from Greensboro leaves at 0:15 instead of 9:5. The night train from Greensboro arrives at 9:1Q instead of 9:45. Death came at Greeusboro yesterday morn ing. : Mrs. Settle, widow of the late judge Thomas Settle and mother of Hon Thomas Settle, member of congress, died yesterday morning. Mr. James Adderton, a University student, arrived here yesterday. Maj. W. A. Guterio, of Durham, came down to interview legislators today. Mr. George M. Hardin, Jr., a well known Durhamite, is in the city to day. President Charles D. Mclver, of ths Greensboro industrial college, ar rived here this morning. Solicitor E. W. Pou spent Sunday at his home in Smithneld ana re turned this morning in time for court, Mr. J. W. Cooper, secretary of the Y. M. C. A., has conquered his second attack of grip for this season, and is out again. Mr. J. H. The civil service commission at Washington .has ordered that an ex amination be held in this city ou Sat urday, March 23 1, 1895, coimueucing at 0 o'clock a. in., for the grades of clerk and carriers in the city post of (ice. Only citizens of the United States can be examined. The age limitations are as follows : for carrier not under 21 nor over 40 : for all other positions not under 18 years. No application will be accepted for this examination unless filed with the undersigned in complete form, on the proper blank, before 5 o'clock p. m., ou March 18th, 1895. The civil service commissioner takes this opportunity of stating that the examiuinations are open to all re spectable citizens who may desire to en ter the postal service, without regard to their political all! iin ions.
