Yesterday Ransom Taylor, colored, drove a wagon over a 2-year-old child of Mr. P. B Glenn. The evidence was that Taylor did not see the child. The bones of one arm are broken, also tbe bones of a foot, and there are bad bruises. The accident occurred at the corner of Ni rth West and West Morgan streets. The injuries are not dangerous. Mr. Vonll -iinaon gives tbe follow ing facts regarding the weather here in July: The men temperature was 77 degrees; tbe highest 100. on the 3()tb; the lowest 52, on tbe 18:u. The greatest daily range was 31 degrees, on the Jrd, The mean temperature f - r June daring the past, nine years is 76. The high 'ft wind velocity was 28 miles bq hour, from the north. Tbe total rainfall was 3 70 inches. It was a drv Jane, liked by the farmers, for the average June rainfall here is 4.64 inches. The accumulated excess of daily mean temperature in June was 55 degrees. The accumulated defi ciency of daily mean temperature since January 14, 1 413 degrees; av erage daily deficiency, 2.8 degrees. T,his is quite remarkable. It has been alleged by some that the nature uf the freight traffic agree ment between the Seaboard Air Line and the Atlantic Coast Line is so rig id that the latter cannot break away and join forces with the Southern. Yet it is stated by a high official that it is not a strong agreement, but can be shaken at any time. Mr. Piggott of Atlanta sang a patriotic hymn. The state treasurer has received from the government, from the fund under the Morrill act,- $31,000 for the two agricultural and mechanical col leges. During the absence of tbe editor, a few days atfo, a publication was made n the Visitor regarding the street railway wbisb bas caused no little comment aud criticism. The article n question was one which the editor oes not endorse and for which of course be bearH no responsibility. Tbe Visitor desires above all things to be QHt and hence thin statement, which is but plain justice to manager Reeler, ho has done go much to develop the street railway, and who has been well aided by his employes. The Visitor as nothing to do with personal quar- els or dislikes, but proposes to treat corporations and individuals with jub'ics ana equal eoarit iy. KEMXAXTS. Today, as was stated in the Visitor, the Raleigh News and Ot nerver began to take the associated press di8patob.es, nd a lively little war, it seems, is to be the result. The uuited press claims it has a three years contract with the paper. The associated press has put Its wire in the News i.nd Observer office and the united pres wire is re moved, but i(H dispatches will be sent from the western uuion iifllce. There will probably be a suit I y the uuited press. The associated press eems to be gaining jjrouud rapidly. The News and Observer is bound to have the news. The state auditor now takes charge of the issue of warrants for direct taxes, undr the provisions of the new act.
