IN CIRCULATION.
TELEPHONE NO 168
WEDNESDAY
July 18, 1898.
SLOWLY BUT SURELY.
More than a month ago, by orders of
the War Department, details from the
JSattalions composing the First Regi
ment N. C. Volunteers at Jacksonville,
were sent to this State to obtain re
cruits for their regiment. At the same
time details from the Second Regiment
in camp here went throughout the
State in search of men wishing to
volunteer for service in the ranks. The
work of recruiting the two regiments
has progressed slowly but surely, and
at last the Second Regiment's full
quota has been obtained and that or
ganization, though composed of more
verdant soldiers is in better shape as
for equipment and organization than
is the First Regiment
There are various reasons for this
success on the part of the Second Regi
ment and by no means the least attrac
tive card presented is the fact that the
regiment is here on home ground and
its future service is yet uncertain. i
On the other hand the First Regi
ment is several hundred miles away;
is nearer Cuba than North I'arolina;
is reasonably certain to be caiU l into
service with the army of Invasi :: when
- tb at'ac-k on Havana Is to !l' made;
and is composed In the majority of well
trained soldier s, who, the recruits fear
will always have superior positions
thus shutting off the avenues of pro
motion. I
The Second Regiment now has more
men than it can use, and the First
Regiment is in need of about 150 men. I
Of the two regiments there should be'
no choice, but the man volunteering at '
this time and really desiring to see ; The elevatfr! car line at the transfer

A STUDY FOR YOUNG MEN.
Young men just entering the battle
of life should listen to the advice of
those who study the questions which
are constantly presenting themselves
to business men. There is nothing more
necessary for the success of any busi
ness than advertising and the young
man applying for a position, in any
establishment should keep himself well
posted as to what his employer's rivals
are offering to the public and be able
to write an attractive and readable
"ad." if called upon to do such work.
Printers Ink contains the following
common sense statement of facts:
"There are many clerks employed in
stores who are earning small salaries,
and who could easily be of more ser
vice to their employers and infinitely
benefit themselves by being able to
write advertisements.
. "The average business man dislikes to
write Us advertisements. He leaves It
to the last moment, and the work is in
many cases done imperfectly." Should
one of bis clerks be able to relieve him
pf the responsibility undoubtedly that
employe would become more and more,
of value. .
- 'Supposing a man applied for the posi
tion of clerk In a store; ' Would he not1
be- more apt to get the place if he
could say to the storekeeper, Twill not
. only clerk for you, but I will attend
to your advertising!' v
"A young man has an . advantage,
, because- he has a knowledge,' of the
.goods and has only to learn how to put
his knowledge in readable form. He has
hut to tell in type what he tells the
customer every, day. " A little careful

FRIENDLY SUGGESTION.
Our dear friend. Dr. Joyful Laughter
Ramsey, Indulges In one of his old-time
lamentations 'n tne last Issue of the
, The Bulletin and bemoans the fact that
!the circulation of this free periodical
is so large that he fears many of the
-j eager readers are unable to appreciate
, fherein set forth. We would suggest to
i Dr. Ramsey that he furnish the people
, with some light reading these hot days.
Bra Ramsey, perhaps, interest would be
! aroused if it were announced that the
next Bulletin would contain a few se-
lections as follows: A poem on Spring,
I by Captain John R. Smith, set to
muslc by Dr. Ramsey himself; an arti
cle pn "Mumblepeg as a Past Time,"
by Prof. C. B. Williams; illustrated
paper on 'The Intellectual Attainments
of a Pelican," and "Whales as Pets for
Children," by Curator Brimley; "How to
1
Secur Offices," by Prof. W. A. With
ers: Amusing Children, by Prof.
JIassey; "The Ethics of Chickenhood,"
by Mr. F. E. Hege; "There's Merit in
Kinship," by J. G. Kelly; "How to
1 Cultivate Christian Charity," by Direc
I tor J. William Bailey, and "Julius
; Caesar's Mistakes," by Attorney Har-
I ri With suph . fnrpnst tYia RnlloHn
would not be above the intelluectual
capacity of the average reader. If North
Carolinians in vain strive to master
the wisdom contained in this document
Dr. Ramsey should simplify his lan
guage to suit the benighted ideas of the
people. The Bulletin is the official or-
j pan of the Agricultural Department,
! and it causes us pain to learn that the
literary efforts of Dr. Ramsey are un
' appreciated.
1 THE EVENING NEWSPAPER.
The Boston (Mass.) Transcript pre
sents the following argument in favor
of the evening newspaper as an adver
tising medium:
"The value of the evening newspaper
is not exhausted when it has given
the news of the hour, or has helped the
business man over the tedium of travel
from his office to his home. Copies are
seldom found littering the seats of
steam or electric cars, as it is taken to
the household for perusal by the whole
family. Of course, the evening is the
time when it can he most thoroughly
read and discussed. Moreover, so
r:i;iid has become every medium of in
teilis' iu-e from world's end to world's
i nd. that the evening paper is more
favorably circumstanced than its morn
ing contemporaries for keeping pace
with the genuine news of each day.
The facilities for extracting the best
essence of the world's history for the
day, and the world's thought upon
passing events, have been brought to
siieh a high slate of development that
it is enabled to keep even pace with
daily events, furnishing a brief resume
of such morning news as may have
been expanded by other sheets beyond
real value and keeping the record clear
and unbroken."

"What has Admiral Cervera and the

This was supposed to be a war for
humanity's sake, yet it is suggested
that the above Spanish officials be sent

Raleigh wouid welcome Admiral Cer

James City and its suburb across the
river would send a large excursion here
to see the distinguished Admiral. Thus
he might be punished.
Richard Harding Davis says the army

haps Mr. Harding's services would be
accepted if another animal was needed.
