the leakage of a gas meter. I he hre department was Sum
moned and did heroic work. The flames were soon sub
dued, but it was feared that the damage was irreparable.
The Law Library was in this.building, and many handsome
busts and pieces of statuary.
The work of clearing away the debris in the capitol,
which was the result of yesterday's explosion of fire, bejan
today. An examination of the Supreme Court room, to
which the fire Was confined, showed that the walls and
ceilings were discolored and the carpets soaked, but no
serious damage done. The benches occupied by the
Judges were uninjured, and the briefs left by some of the
Judges, under their paper weights, were undisturbed. The
windows and sash in the fine old colonial windows, flanking
the bench, are in ruins. However, the frescoed ceilings are
only blurred and spotted, and the carpets and draperies
soaksd. The personal effects of the Judges, such as their
robes, etc., were uninjured. The main loss is in the mar
shal's office, in the storage room, where the valnab'e old
records are kept. The extent of this loss is not yet exactly
determined, but (he court officials expect to make a critical
examination today.
