SATURDAY JUNE 24, 1899 The Mormons or letter Day Saints, as they style themselves, have became very active in this State agaiu. They are now making a house to house can vass in Moore and Bertie counties. It seems that any 'schism" under the sun tan find some followers in North Caro lina. The fact that the Lynchites and Tire Baptizers have made any progress shows how easily the ignorant can be led into any belief that has a few fol lowers. Judgiug by the conduct of these Fire Baptizers, Lynchites, etc., would it not be preferable to import some dis ciples of Buddha or Mahomet to this Mate? Could their propaganda be more demoralizing or degrading? Authentic information was recently officially given here that in Richmond the members of a Woman's Baptist Foreign Missionary Society had gone over bodily to the Mormons. It might be in order to in quire if one man took in the whole crew. Next week the saloons in Warren .'oun t,v wiil lie supplnntei by tit'- disprnary. Representative Henderson says that he will not adopt Rood's rules when he hecomes sp?akv. Since the Spaniards were driven from Cuba over 2,000 saloons have been opea il. Cuba is now Americanized. The latest trust is a beggars' trust Why should not those who are beggared by trusts form trusts to prey upon pos session ? The palatable cantaloupe is being ship ped North from Wilmington at $1.50 to $2.50 per crate. The crop is somewhat backward and materially cut off by cold weather. Senator Bate, of Tennessee, says an anti-expansion plank will catch the Ger man vote of the northwest. Yes. tiier was a prevailing suspicion before that there was more policy than patriotism in anti-expansion. The Commissioner of Agri- ullure of Virginia in an interview d.-plnros the decadence of agricultural Fah- in that State. This shows the imp : : .;c e of maintaining and improving our North Carolina Fairs each year. In address before Wafford College, Senator McLamin of South Carolina declared that from the logic of history i he duty of the United States is to ac cept the newly acquired territory as a sacred trust for God and humanity. He made a strong expansion speech. The penitentiary directors refuse to change the warrants to conform with the State Treasurer's letter. We don't know who is right, the State Treasurer or the directors, but we do know that it is not right to writhhold the money from the creditors of the penitentiary. Already some of them have waited a year for their money. The latest issue of The Sing Sing Star of Hope, published by the inmates of the penitentiary, has this to say of a serial story written by No. 321: " 'From the North Cape to Venice' will be contin ued during the author's next 'bit' His sentence was commuted on June 0, 1899, and excused, of course, from steady con tribution. 'Et pauio majors cantat!' The Wilson News, agreeing with IV Shearer, of Davidson College, says: "By ail means let the Bible be used as a text book in the schools. Let the beauties and the truths of the Book of Books be taught in every North Carolins school and within her borders there will arise a type of citizenship that will re flect added lustre and glory upon the fair name of the State." The Bible should be the foundation of all education. What is education but learning to think and should not a child's first thoughts be directed to God? BED HOT FROM THE GUN. Was the ball that hit G. UKAVfc) MEN FALL Victims to stomach, liver and kidney troubles as well as women, and all feel the results in loss of appetite, poisons in the blood, backache, nervousness, headache and tired, listless, run-down feeling. But there's no need to feel like that. Listen to J. W. Gardner, Ida ville, Ind. He says: "Electric Bitters are just the thing for a man when be is all run down, and don't care whether he lives or dies.
