THE TIMES-VISITOR. RALE1QH, N. C. PUBLISHED BY 11 IK VISITOR-PRESS (JOMPANX i IN CORPORATE!).) i, Entered as Second-Class Mail Matter.) OKICB IN TUB ACADEMY OF MUSIC. INTERSTATE TELEPHONE NO. 179 BKL.L. TELEPHONE . . NO. 132 SUBSCRIPTION PRICKS. One Year $3.00 One Month 28 rtlUJ LEADER IN THF NEWS 1XD IN OITV CIRCULATION. WEDNESDAY JULY 12 189 PROFITABLE CONVICTS. The new convict lease system in Geor gia, t fcich some months ago supplanted the antiquated method of disposing of convicts, seems to be operating success fully. The first quarterly report of the new prison commission has just been filed, and shows that $50,000 gross profits come to the State. This makes a total of $200,000 per annum, as against $25,000 formerly gained from the irregular lease of the convicts. Un der the old regime complaints wore fre quent, and more than onejscandal arose out of the inhuman treatment of the convicts. The nw system of State su pervision has worked wonders and gained the approbation of those who at first opiwsed it as unwise and expensive. Judge Moore's infliction of penalties upon offenders is a splendid example to our lower courts. The Times-Visitor regrets the acci dent to our most excellent Coroner. Ir. .1. J. L. McCullers. That much abused lynching Ix'e has struck Kansas ami the novices made a great botch of their work. But give the boys a chance and lliey will do bet ter next time. It will be a pleasant and appropriate service to-night at Christ Church in recognition of the quarter century or faithful services of the able and much beloved rector. lr. M. M. Marshall. The Times-Visitor wishes them another twenty-live years pleasant associations. Can it lie possible? Has Alger re signed? 'Twas thought Bagan embalm ed him so he would keep In a Cabinet for four year. But Senatorial hot air decomposed the portfolio and poor Al ger will lie buried. There will Ik great joy m this baili wick, for there is a future Tor the al dermanic goat. The U. S. Agricultural Department has struck not oil, but milk, in the goat. For years the goat has been a success in the butter busi ness but now one good female Angora limit will produce four quartos of rich milk daily, upon a diet of one-twelfth the cost of that of a cow. The action of the Democratic alder nianic caucus last evening in selecting Dr. James MeGee, Jr., for city super intendent of health meets the hearty approbation of the people of Raleigh. Dr. MeGee as city physician lias been diligent, faithful and painstaking, and merited the increased honors which have come to him. The aldermnnic caucus could not have made a finer selection for mayor pro tern than theyilid last night in chosing A Merman J. S. Wynne. He is an ex cellen business mon and in municipal ethics he seems to have found the golden mean, avoiding the extremes which separate the two schools in our city. Glorious news! The old Raleigh audi torium to be pulled down and a new modern one constructed. The Metro politan city is to have a great structure erected in some convenient locality where immense crowds may congregate to consider vital questions, political, re ligious, agricultural, commercial and so cial. It will be ready for democratic, republican, populist, prohibitionists, gold-bug and free-silver conventions next year. This is the plan of the Chamber of Commerce. Judge Fred Moore is surely a "Daniel come to jndgmen." Though the young est judge uixin the bench In point of service, yet he has grasped the situa tion and deals with incorrlgable offend ers in a manner calculated to do them, some good, diminish our criminal dock ets and lessen the court expenses. It will be well for those who have been playing regular engagements upon the calendar of our criminal court terms to hustle to some other district while Judge Moore presides in this one. San Francteco, Oak, July 10. Dr. Mary -0. Edmunds, well-known phys ician 'of this city, died of fright early thi morning. The accidental setting off of a burglar alarm welted her to such a degree that she went to a whi tlow and, blew a whistle. Help came, but she opened the front door . .6. but as she opened the front door she tottefed and fell dea4 . Mrs. Edmunds was a talented and successful physi cian, the widow of Judge Edmunds, late of the Superior Court. She leaves two sous ami a daughter. The latter. Miss Annie Edmunds, is a teacher In Berke ley, and one of her sons, Frank W. Edmunds, who has been connected with the United' States Geodetic Survey for years, is now in Alaska, lien other son, Dr. Harry Edmunds, is a physician in Fresno county. MISS WHEELER TO GO TO MA NILA. Washington, Juply 10. One of the happiest women in Washington is Miss Annie Wheeler, the daughter of Gen eral Wheeler. She is going to accom pany her father to the Philippines Miss Wheeler has lteen appointed a nurse by the War Department, and so she goes in an official capacity. She ap plied herself for the commission, and after her record in the hospitals in Cuba and the camps in this country the Department cheerfully granted her re quest, and on Saturday she got her papers. She starts wit hher father this week on his overland trip to Sn Fran cisco and will sail for Manila on the first transport. When It was settled that General Wheeler was to go to the Philippines Miss Annie determined that she would go with him; so, unbe known to him, she applied for a nurse's commission and secured it. S.
