And it came the next day, he! he! The Hev. John Smith, A. B., D. D., ' A high sounding name, we must all agree. But he put up the plea That he wouldn't feel free Until he had gotten his third degree. He would stop with a Ph. D. By this time his name had grown a long tail; A. B., I. I)., Ph. D. would avail My neighbor or me; But Smith went to a tree And shook it most violently. Knott Describes a Recent Visit to Lincolnshire, England. Rev. J. O. Knot, pastor of Emmanuel Methodist Episcopal Church South, of this city, returned on Saturday from a visit to Europe and occupied his pulpit I yesterday morning and evening. Hav- Iticr Tinited the hirfhnlflCA of the We- ' leys, and also Oxford and London, which are closely associated with the Methodsit movement, lie spoke last evening npon a "Visit to the Birthplace and Grave of John Wesley." Among other things he said: 'John Wesley was tlhe personification of Methodism. He was a child of Pro vidence, as was Methodism. Both his father and mother were children of Nonconformists, and both became mem bers of the Established Church despite early training. Their sons, John and Charles, howover, had Nonconformist blood in their veins, and became the most aggressive and independent preach ers of their day. "In what is called the Isle of Ax holme, in northern Lincolnshire, is still to be seen the quaint village of Bp worth, five miles from a railroad, and no larger now than it was 100 years ago. It numbers nlxnit 2.1)00 souls. At the east of the town on a hill are to lie seen the Bpworth rectory and Epworth Church, still in the hands of the Church of England, the 'living' lieing worth now about $3,000. The rectory is the one in which the Wesley boys were reared, and the church, though changed some within, remains much as it was when Samuel Wesley ministered there and Susanna, with her 10 children, joined in the service. "The rectory Is the scene of Wes ley's rescue ';-oni the flames, and stands to-day a different house from tie one he was born in beennse of the fin which so uearly proved his destruction. Here he was rescued when :i boy 6 years old. The rectory was the scene of that wonderful system of traln'pg which the Wesley children passed through, their mother unconsciously training both the fou'ul.-r and the hyiru writer of the great Methodist Church, while she did the best he could to make 200 a year suffice to upp.y Ur unusually large family. "At London one nay sin the home in which Wesley passed tile closing days of his life. It adjoins the church he built City Road Chapel. The rcw.m in which he died '.s connected with a small apartment where Wesley spent an hour in prayer each morning. In the City Road churchyard, with Dr. Clarke, the connnenlar r, at his side and Dr. Watson, the iln-otoglau, at his head, the yellow mminint'iit of John Wesley stands. Jnt arrow the strout is the Bun Hill Fields burial grounds, in which Susanna Wesley, the mother of Methodism, is buried." Baltimore Sun. VICAR PAINTING. HIS OWN 1 CHRUOH. (From a London Letter.) The Rev. G. M. Macdonald, vicar of St. John the Baptist's Church, at Spald ing, is setting his brethren of the cloth a good, example hi humility just now. The outside of the church sadly lacked a coat of paint, but there were no funds for the purpose. It was a ticklish di lemma, but the vicar, accepting Hob son's choice, tucked, up his sleeves an ! went to work himself with a paint pot and brush.
