The home-coming of Admiral George Dewey at this time is of special mo ment to the nation. When the ex citement and enthusiasm which makes his arrival has subsided' the eyes of the American people will be turned with confidence upon Admiral Dewey for a soJrotiani of the difficulties which now stand in the way of the assertion of Federal authority in the Tlii'Ip pSnes. The whole nation believes in Admiral Dewey and his statements and recommendations will be accepted as conclusive by a vast majority of his fellow countrymen. This confidence is firmly grounded on his past record, his achievements from the declaration of war until the victory in Manila Bay, his cool and! faultless discretion from then until the surrender of Manila, his manifold ability as an administrator, officer and diplomat under strange con ditions and his intimate knowledge of the natives, the country and the present situation. These facts amply warrant the American people in looking to Ad miral Dewey for the truth as to early peace In the Philippines and how to secure it. Let's hear from Dewey now and if the Administration is wise his counsel will be the words of one speaking with authority and his voice will be potential in directing our war in the far east. It la remarkable the lumber of .vw buildings in the course .-f 'nsriii t:on as residences about Ualeigh. il i.-d'v a square in the city but the ioi! f the hammer, or trowel can be e.ird cither on new buildings or nrKlii i ns t ot,v already built. The Atlanta Constitution says "No representative Democrat, no Democrat of any influence, so far as we know, sympathizes with the attitude assumed by those New England Republicans in denouncing the war brought n by Aguinaldo as an attack on tho-.i who re fighting for their liberties." That la rough on some of the papers la this State. The Constitution must hare read them out of the party. - Kmeton's good people are agitating toe subject of a night sell, vol for chil- dren and old folks who aire deficient in education antt cannot find the time - during the day to attend school.
