1 A CHINESE POB. : ; .V I Forerunner ot "The Raven' Found in v-""- A-'. Celestial Literature. (New York Evening Post.) k Two hundred years before Christ Chinese statesman and poet, Kla Yl by name, anticipated Edgar Allen Poe's masterpiece. This we have on the au tborlty of The Hook-Buyer, and Mr, J, Dyer . Bell's "Things Chinese'' (Scrlb ner's), In which the ' Chinese "Raven" rents as follows: ' THE FU-NIAO, OR THE BIRD OF FATE. 'Twas in the month of chill November, As lean, very wel remember In dismal, gloomy, crumbling hall, Betwixt moss-covered, reeking wals. An exiled poet lay : ,."'. .. On his bed of straw reclining, Half despairing, half repining; When athwart the window sill Flew a bird of omen. 111, And seemed inclined to stay. To my book of occult learning, Suddenly I thought of turning. All the mystery to know. Of that shameless owl to crow, That would not go away. . "Wherever such a bird shall enter. 'This sure some power above has sent her, i (So salfl the mystery book),-to show. The human dweller forth must go" But where it did not say. Then anxiously the bird addressing, And my Ignorance confessing, "Gentle bird, in mercy deign The will of fate to me explain, Whero Is my future way?" It raised Its head as If 'twere seeking Then folded up Us sable wing, Nor did It utter anything, But breathed a "Wcll-a-day!" More eloquent than any diction, That simple sign produced conviction, Furnishing to mo the key Of tho awful mystery That on my spirit lay. "Fortune's wheel Is over turning, To human eye there's no discerning Weal or woo in any state; Wisdom is to bide your fate;" This is what it seemed to say In that simple "Well-a-ilay." ' This Is not very good poetry, but it is a "Raven" poem without doubt. Wo know that Ther n'is no ncv.e guise that it n'c - old, but wo should be glad none tho less to know more about Kai Yl. noil BURNS MORE HOUSES. Carl claims ho was at home In bed at the time the fire started, but he is being held pend ing action by the grand Jury, which body Is now Investigating the riot cases. Carl was arrested because of statements made by Ernest Miller, a clerk in tho Queen ntWt Crescenf Railroad, who claims to have witnessed the firing of tho negro school house. There were four negro houses in the vicinity of the school burned last night at midnight, but the police were unable to trace the origin of the fire, as the panic-stricken negroes told contradictory stories. A well-attended maps meeting of ne groes were hclil in the city last night, at which, among other resolutions, the fol lowing was adopt ed: "We learn with regret that many of our good people are sacrificing their property, personal and real, and leaving the city and State as the result ot Ti; recent troubles through which we Save passed. We see no necessity for this, feeling assured, as we do, of future pro tection, and because of the confidence we have in (he authorities and the law nbldiug citizens. Therefore, we urge them not to sacrifice their homes or oth er property in a reckless desire to leave the city. As a people we have suffered so much from such movements in the past that we should now guard against them with all possible caution. "We also wish to express our sympa thy to the bereaved families of the police officers who were strcken down In the discharge of their duties, as well as to those of all other innocent, sufferers who were the victims of mob violence." -,': DEATH OF MRS.
