If the beetles are destroyed as the arrive and before the eggs are deposited the injury can be kept at a minimum. However, this method of control «'nuld be practical on only a few rows of beans. Caldium Arsenate and Hydrated Lime.—Calcium arsenate diluted at the rate of one part of the arsenic to nine parts of lime is recommended as the most really available material for dusting beans. This combination has now been used with satisfactory results for three seasons. It is es sential that the material should be applied to the underside of the bean foliage as the beetles and larvae feed almost entirely from underneath and it is a waste of energy and materials to dust the poison on the upper sides of the plant. This may be accom plished with an angle nozzel so ar ranged that the dust is directed up ward. Calcium arsenate may be applied in the form of a spray according to i the following formula: Calcium arsenate, three-fourths pound; hydrated lime, ond and one half pounds; water, fifty gallons. Magnesium Arsenate. — Experi ments in Alabama have indicated that magnesium arsenate is least injurious to bean foliage. This poison may be applied either in the form of a spray or dust. Two pounds of magnesium arsenate and one pound of caseinate of lime to each one hundred gallons of water applied to- the undesides of the foliage in the form of a spray has given excellent results without injury to the beans. According to Mr. N. F. Howard the magneisum arsenate has been giving good results on large acreages and is strongly endorsed by growers. Magnesium arsenate is also safe for use as a dust in which form it sould be thoroughly mixed at the rate of one part magnesium arsenate to five parts of hydrated lime. Calcium Sulphur Dust.—Although somewhat more expensive, these ma terials mixed in the proportion of epVium arsenate one part, super-fine sulphur one part, and hydrated lime IMPORTANT NOTICE ALL PERSONS INDEBTED TO US ARE HEREBY REQUESTED TO MAKE SETTLEMENT AT ONCE BY CASH OR NOTE. , WE CANNOT EXTEND FURTHER CREDIT TO Aft*/ONE WHO OWES US A PAST DUE ACCOUNT. SIGNED, CURTIS & THOMPSON four parts, have given excellent re sults. This dust may be purchased ready prepared or prepared at home. The Cost of Treatment.—Records in Alabama made be government en tomologists indicate that the cost of protecting beans is somewhat as fol lows: The cost of making four ap plications of dust ranged from $4.50 to $12 per acre, depending upon the] price of materials and the kind of machinery used; while the cost of four spray treatments likewise rang ed from $4 to $8 per acre. These figures include labor and material. The Purchase of Materials.—The ealcium arsenate and also dusting ma chines can be purchased from many stores in southwest Virginia. Several hardware firms are endeavoring to -«ist their patrons by mixing the cal cium arsenate land hydrated lime. Some are selling the poison at a re duced price in order to encourage the treatment of beans. If you are un able to purchase the material ask your tounty agent or write th Vir ginia Experiment Station, Blacks burg, Virginia. Recommendation* Apply the poison as soon as the beetles appear and repeat the applica I tion at intervals of a week or ten days depending upon the weather and the number of beetles present. If the infestation is serve four applica tions may be required. Secure a machine equipped with an attachment that will enable you to dust the underside of the foliage. At present calcium arsenate is the poison most • readily available. If used as a dust, dilute the calcium arsenate with nine parts of hydrated lime. Do not use lead arsenate or Paris green on bean foliage as these' poi sons seriously burn the beans. Danger of Person* Being Pois oned by Eating Beans That Have Been Dusted with Calcium Arse nate.—Perhaps the most impor tant reason why the bean beetle has gone unchecked and with lit tle or no effort at contrcU is be cause many people have been afraid to use beans after the plants had been dusted with ar senical poison. The beans should be carefully washed and all traces of the poi son dust removed befoite being cooked. At the Alabama Experi ment Station a chemical analysis of several samples of dusted beans was carefully made and it was found~that in order to get a fatal dose of arsenic a person woald have to eat forty pounds of green beans. For the past several seasons it has been the practice of the bean growers in the infested area to dust beans, and thus far there have been no reports of injury.
