FIRST WELFARE WORKERS MEET AT WAYNESV1LLE (Continued from page 1) the creation of an enlightened Gen eral Assembly that would require each of the 100 counties of the state to have a county hospital where medical services would be in reach of everyone for as it is hospital service is beyond the reach of all except the charity class and the rich.—Thus leaving the person with a limited in come in many instances out of reach of hospital service. Dr. Sam’s talk was followed by an open discussion at which Dr. Able and Dr. McCracken told of the new county hospital in Haywood county just being completed. The Duke Foundation gave $10,000 to the con struction of this hospital and is go ing to give $1 per day for every free bed in the hospital. Miss Mary Frances Camp, Director of County Organizations of the State Board of Charities and Public Wel fare was present and gave some in teresting facts concerning the eco nomnical value of welfare work. She pointed out that the value of the en forcement of the school law was alone worth the cash of the wel fare work. In each of the fifty seven counties having organized welfare work the saving of county fund by investigations concering re lief are having the county poor funds administered in a business like man ner, have in nearly every instance paid for the work not to consider the untold value of the other duties that the welfare worker performs. Miss Camp stated that it was impossible for the County Commissioners to in vestigate the needs of relief and fol low up the work without the aid of the welfare' worker. She gave an illustration of one county in the state that had changed its county home into a county hospital—and by hav ing the county prison camp qear, the cook at the hospital, as well as the orderly were both serving time on ] the gang, while a number of the other prisoners work in the hospital garden. The cash to run this hos pital was just half that of the cash of running the old county home. Showing what can be accomplished by better planing and management. 1 Mr. N. E. Mr. Wright stated that eith er ’ job was almost more than one person could do, much less trying to do both, and that it wold be a great step forward if the state would require every county to put on the welfare worker. By the co-operation of the Parent-Teachers Association and Mr. Wright’s untiring efforts, much progress along welfare work has been accomplished in Swain County. Bryson, state , geologist. The best waste material is used for terrazo floors. Cherokee county has more marble than any. other county in the State. The depqsits enter the*State from Fannin county Georgia, and extend along the Notla river to Murphy and along the Valley river to Topton. There are abo deposits of this same type of marble in the neighbor hood of Peachtree and Brasstown. The color varies from a blue-gray* more or less motled, to almost pure white. —’ ties in the district were represented.
