C. Wyche, United States District Judge, Columbia, S. C. “The style is splendid and the subject matter is interesting from beginning to end . . . Every lawyer in North Carolina and ev ery other citizen of the state in terested in its history ought to read (this) book." John J. Pai-k er, United States Circuit Judge. . . both easy to read and full of much of the history of the state. Mr. Brooks has rendered a real service in giving us this book.”—Bernard W. Spilman, in Charity and Children. “It is a thoroughly fine piece of work and deserves a place among our great legal biographies —John W. DavW, former Ambas sador to the Court of St. James. “This, to me, is one of the most fascinating biographies of recent years. It is a minature of North Carolina painted by an ar tist. The clear, non-teachnical, non-legal style carries the reader from one dramatic scene to an other in the life of a man whose influence as a soldier, scholar, chief justice of his state and champion of reform will last for ages. Ben R. Lacy, Jr., Pres Union Theological Seminary “We are grateful to Mr. Brooks for recalling to our atten tion one of the half dozen great est jurists and one of the most interesting figures of the last generation.” — Henry Comma ger New York Herold Tribune. Association Will Meet Here Sunday The Gaston County Baptist Sunday School Association, with representatives from tne various Baptist churches of the county, will hold its monthly meeting on Sunday afternoon at 2 with the Second Baptist Church here. Rev. E. G. Powell of East Gasto nia is superintendent of the or ganization. The theme is: “Mag nifying the Preaching Service through the Sunday School.” The program follows: Hymn—“1 Love Thy Kingdom, Devotional Period — Rev. 0. H. Special Music Minutes Roll Call Business Offering Departmental Conferences The Rev. Mr. Powell urges that since this is the first meeting of the new Associational year, that the Association start right and keep right, and do its best to I Dec. 1 Deadline For Gift Sending XMAS PARCELS Dec 1 To insure delivery of all gift parcels in time for Christmas be sure and send them by December 1 at the latest. That important reminder came yesterday from the Charlotte Of fice of Defense Transportation. Transportation facil’ties are now so overburdened, Mr. L. F. Manneschmidt, O D T District Manager pointed out, that deliv ery in time for the Yule holiday make this the most progressive year in the history of the organ ization. At the morning service at the Second Baptist Church, the pas •or will bring a message on “Be i-ath the Cross”. At the evening service the first ,>urt of the hour will be known as “Hymn Time” with the con gregation singing request num bers. The pastor will bring an evan gelistic message and draw a pic ture on the theme of some well known hymn. | can be guaranteed only if the I December 1 deadline is met. And, the ODT official declared, you get better selection and bet ter service at local stores when you shop early. Here are some of the reasons listed by ODT which make an early Christmas shopping season essential this year. 1944 gift sending is expected to top 1943 by 25 per cent. Gifts will travel greater distances due to wartime population dislocation; nation wide transportation and local de livery of Christmas packages, when added to the heavy holiday furlough travel, with all trans portation facilities already over burdened by war conditions cre ate a major problem. The only solution to that prob lem, the ODT District Manager emphasized, is complete coopera tion of the public in meeting the December 1 deadline for gift sending. Two Richmond County farmers removed 10 dozen medium sized eggs from a lot of 120 dozen. The remaining 110 dozen graded A Large and sold for an extra $4.40. -MORE ABOUT Cherryville’s Vote David P.
