Wally Erooks “Any discrimination against an individual based solely on race creed or color or national origin, is un-American and un-Christian’’ says Dr. Channing H. Tobias senior secretary, National Coun cil of the Y.M.C.A. "If a man is discriminated against because of ignorance, he can study, acquire knowledge and overcome the handicaps; if he is discriminated against because of poverty, he can work, acquire wealth and ov ercome the handicap; if he is dis criminated against because he is J^a^F&renttiood WHAT IS THANKSGIVING FOR? Children always love Thanks giving Day. That is the day when there will be especially good things to eat! And then there is all the bustle of the preparation. Children love to help with this— they can roll out the cookies, make simple decorations, set the table. They will get more fun out of it if they can help as well as stuff themselves in traditional manner. But food isn’t the only thing rhey look forword to on that day. Thanksgiving dinner often brings together members of the family who live in far-off places—grand parents, aunts, uncles or cousins. Such family gathering's are all ioo few these days, and they are really very important for chil dren. So you may have to subs : tute old friends who are with: walking or bus distance. Anyw boys and girls find it very ci nt forting to know that there are people beyond their small home circle who are also close to them An awareness of these extra rel atives and friends gives them an added sense of belonging. Just having a special group that is near and dear is surely something to be thankful for. In the midst of all the prepara tions your child is likely to ask you: “What is Thanksgiving Day for?” Of course, your answer will depend on the age of the young questioner. If he is not yet school age he will want only a very simple answer. He’ll be con unclean, he can wash, acquire habits of cleanliness and over come the handicap; but if the discrimination is based on color, he can not change that. The re sponsibility for his being non white is not his but God’s. There fore, it is not just an injustice to the man to exclude him from fel lowship on account of color; it is an affront to the God who made him as he is.” BUY BONDS tent to know that this is the day we set aside when the harvest has all been stored by the farmers, to Rive our thanks to God for na ture's bounty, for the good things which the earth has produced for our food. If your child is older he will probably have learned at school about the first Thanksgiving TOO years ago, when the Pilgrims gave thanks that they had come safely through their ordeals in this new land. But even if he’s already beard the story, the chances are that your youngster would like you to tell it to him again, with those little family trimmings j mothers always give their stories. | The record of this stalwart lit-1 tie hand of Pilgrims struggling with Indians and unknown dan ! gers in a strange land is in itself > thrilling tale. You can make it ven more meaningful for chil-, i en by showing them how it re ates to the present day—by tell ing them how, through the years since that first brave band came , to these shores seeking freedom I from oppression, many others come for the same reasons. Ti e Pilgrims were, in a way our first immigrants, and it was they who blared the trail for the millions of people who have come here from many lands, people of many . different races and religions and ( nationalities — all knowing that here in America they would find what those first pilgrims found: a place where people Would he free to think and speak and worship as they believed.. You will give a personal mean ing to Thanksgiving this year if you tell your children how they themselves can uphold the tradi tion of freedom by respecting the achievements and the aspira tions and the rights of other chil dren — of all races, creeds and nationalities — and by helping them to work and play together in comradeship and harmony. This is the vision which our fore fathers gave to America, and for which thpy suffered and died. This is the America we are all thankful for The farm population in the United States is about 4,800,000 less than four years ago. About half these people left the farm in 1942. Pork production at federally inspected plants was 168. million pounds for the first week in No vember, or 42 million pounds less than a year ago. Guilford county has a planting schedule for 45 acres of, vegeta bles for the county home, sana torium, and county prisoners for next year. It was prepared by the Manager of the home, and the assistant county agent. Used motor oil and mortar col orings are good for ‘"painting” outbuilding’s on the farm. Sever al colois are obtainable.
