Simultaneously President Roose velt, Basil O’Connor, chairman of the Red Cross, and Cilby Chester, chairman of the War Fund cam paign, called upon all American's to support the fifnd drive as an indication of their backing of men in the front lines. In officially opening the cam paign, Chairman O’Connor poin ted iut that the need for Ked Cross services in the coming year will be greater than ever before. “American men have been fighting throughout the world for a long time,” he said. “This year they will need all of the moral support we can give them. The American Red Cross is bringing home to these men wherever they may be stationed. “The task in the next twelve months will be greater for the Red Cross than ever before, for not only must we serve the men in the war zones but we will he required to give increasing assis tance to the boys coming back to the United States. “We know the American peo ple will respond with overwhelm ing generosity, knowing that the money they give to the Red Cross will be used to serve the men and women who are serving in uni form for us.’’ It was estimated here that more than 3,000,000 American Ked Cross volunteers will conduct the house to house eanvass which be Red Cross affiliation during the gins tomorrow. Each canvasser will carry credentials indicating campaign. Outlines Achievements Outlining achievements of the Red Cross during the past year, Mr. O’Connor declared the Ked Cross is serving in every theater of war and with every command. Red Cross workers alsi are on duty at scores of outposts over the world, are giving aid to woun ded men in hospitals in the major battle areas and in the United States, he said. The total number of workers has more than doubled since the last War Fund cam paign. In every invasion during the past year, he pointed out, the Ked Cross has either gone with the troopers or has followed withm a very short time. Red Cross field directors were with General Ei senhower’s men in the great am phibious invasion of France, and with General MacArthur’s forces when they returned to the Philip pines. Home Front Service Expands Red Cross service on the home front has expanded with the ever increasing demand upon »t, Mr. O'Connor said. Over ten million pints of blood havq been abtained since ine war started, and during the past year the Ked Cross has met the re quests of both the Army and Na vy for whole blood shipments ti battle areas in Europe and in the Fur East. Millions of surgical dressings have been prepared for front lu.e and hospital use. Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been poured out to rebuild homes destroyed by floods, high winds and fires. Meanwhile Red Cross produc tion workers in hundreds of com munities have continued the never ceasing program of making warm garments for destitute civilians in war torn countries overseas, and in those countries the Red Cross has assisted the Army in caring for refugees and homeless people.
