Call* for $180 Million :
Fund To Carry Servi- ;
ces Through Year
WASHINGTON, Feb. 28.— ,
Tomorrow the American Ked J
Cross will open its appeal to the .
nation for $130,000,000 to con- •
tinue its world wide operation \
with battle front troops, in hospi- '
tals and on the home front.
Simultaneously President Roose
velt, Basil O’Connor, chairman of
the Red Cross, and Cilby Chester,
chairman of the War Fund cam
paign, called upon all American's
to support the fifnd drive as an
indication of their backing of men
in the front lines.
In officially opening the cam
paign, Chairman O’Connor poin
ted iut that the need for Ked
Cross services in the coming year
will be greater than ever before.
“American men have been
fighting throughout the world for
a long time,” he said. “This year
they will need all of the moral
support we can give them. The
American Red Cross is bringing
home to these men wherever they
may be stationed.
“The task in the next twelve
months will be greater for the
Red Cross than ever before, for
not only must we serve the men
in the war zones but we will he
required to give increasing assis
tance to the boys coming back to
the United States.
“We know the American peo
ple will respond with overwhelm
ing generosity, knowing that the
money they give to the Red Cross
will be used to serve the men and
women who are serving in uni
form for us.’’
It was estimated here that more
than 3,000,000 American Ked
Cross volunteers will conduct the
house to house eanvass which be
Red Cross affiliation during the
gins tomorrow. Each canvasser
will carry credentials indicating
campaign.
Outlines Achievements
Outlining achievements of the
Red Cross during the past year,
Mr. O’Connor declared the Ked
Cross is serving in every theater
of war and with every command.
Red Cross workers alsi are on
duty at scores of outposts over
the world, are giving aid to woun
ded men in hospitals in the major
battle areas and in the United
States, he said. The total number
of workers has more than doubled
since the last War Fund cam
paign.
In every invasion during the
past year, he pointed out, the Ked
Cross has either gone with the
troopers or has followed withm a
very short time. Red Cross field
directors were with General Ei
senhower’s men in the great am
phibious invasion of France, and
with General MacArthur’s forces
when they returned to the Philip
pines.
Home Front Service Expands
Red Cross service on the home
front has expanded with the ever
increasing demand upon »t, Mr.
O'Connor said.
Over ten million pints of blood
havq been abtained since ine war
started, and during the past year
the Ked Cross has met the re
quests of both the Army and Na
vy for whole blood shipments ti
battle areas in Europe and in the
Fur East.
Millions of surgical dressings
have been prepared for front lu.e
and hospital use.
Trained nurse’s aides have been
mestic military and naval hospi
used in increasing numbers in (to

Aid For Disaster*
Neither has the Red Cross re
laxed in its traditional service to
humanity in time of disaster, Mr.
O'Connor said. More than 200 do
mestic disasters have found lied
Cross workers on the job to re
lieve stricken families and to aid
in the rebuilding of communities.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars
have been poured out to rebuild
homes destroyed by floods, high
winds and fires.
Meanwhile Red Cross produc
tion workers in hundreds of com
munities have continued the never
ceasing program of making warm
garments for destitute civilians in
war torn countries overseas, and
in those countries the Red Cross
has assisted the Army in caring
for refugees and homeless people.
