M. 3|C who has been spending a ten day leave here with his parents, Dr. and Mrs. H. H. Allen returned to Bainbridge, Md., Monday. Captain and Mrs. James Allran returned to Newport News, Va., Monday, after spending several days here with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Allran and Mr. J. T. Allen. Mrs. Theda Zepp, Miss Rosa Zcpp and Miss Juanita Putnam of Baltimore, Md., spent the week end here with Mrs. W. B. Putnam. Mr. and Mrs. F. O. Davis of Gastonia Were dinner guests of Dr. and Mrs. H. H. Allen Monday evening. M .s. Kale McCorkle of Fort Bragg and Mrs. L. S. Lallard and daughter, Miss Kalherin Ballard of Alexis spent last Thursday af ternoon here with i.heir sister, Mrs. Steve Stroup and Mr. Stroup Floyd L. Mauney, who has been confined to the Davis Hos pital in Statesville, for the past seven weeks is improving, foll owing an operation. Mrs. Dewey Heafner had as house guests over the week-end, Mrs. Myrtle Berryman of Mon roe and Miss Carmilla Berryman of Charlotte. Mr. and Mrs. Silas Kuss and family of Shelby and Mr. and. Mrs. Howard Barker and daugh ter, Brenda, were dinner guests Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Russ. Mr. and Mrs. Bufort Sellers, Mrs. Robert Russ and Mrs. Albert Brannon spent the week-end in Rock Hill, iS. C., the guests of Pfc. and Mrs." Howard Sellers. Misses Janette Carpenter and Juanita Roberson were week-end Quests of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Seiji's and Miss Mae Sellers. Little Dennis Humphries, son of Mr. and Mrs. Boyce Humphries had his tonsils removed at the Crowell Hospital in Lincolnton Saturday and is getting along nicely. Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Rudisill, Mr. ahd Mrs. Ben K. Rudisill and Mr. and Mrs. S^ M. Butler were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Kiser of Lincolnton Wednes day evening. Mrs. Hillard Houser of New ton who was carried to a local hospital last week was removed to the Charlotte Memorial Hos pital in Charlotte Tuesday where she will undergo an operation. Cherryville Association Meets The Cherryville Chapter of the North Carolina Educational As sociation held its seventh meeting in the Home Economics Depart ment of the High School Building The Teachers of the High School were in charge of the program and the social hour. The business hour was prece ded by delightful refreshments prepared by Miss Stamey and some members of the Home Eco nomics Department. The oak leaf place cards and artistic program added to the floral decorations made a very attractive table. The business hour opened with a message from the retiring pres ident. The new officers were then installed. After a word from the new president, the subject of the program for the afternoon was introduced. Introduction — Mrs. Ralph Hoyle. Purposes of the Dumbartc*# Oaks Proposals— D. O. Rudisill. Principal Organs of Dumbarton Oaks—Miss Mary Prances Hord. Summary of the Proposals—R. C. Sharpe. A United Stand for Security— Mrs. E. E. McDowell. Some “Dos” and “Donts” on Dumbarton Oaks—>Supt. Starnes. The meeting was then adjourn ed. CLASS MEETS The regular monthly meeting of Mrs. H. C. Harrelson s Sunday School class was held at the home of Mrs. Lester Houser Sunday af ternoon with Mrs. Houser and Mrs. Clay Harrelson, Mrs. Robert Harrelson, Mrs. Stacy Harrelson and Mrs. Georgia Ledford joint hostesses: Roses, sweetpeas and pansies were artistically arrangecf thru out the rooms where the class as sembled. A most tempting salad course was served to the follow ing members and invited guests: Mesdames H. C. Harrslson, John Beach, Wilma Byers, Rupert Camp, Robert Cai'jrenter, ’il-oy Homesley, Stacy Harrelson, Clay Harrelson, Hugh Harrelson, Ro bert Harrelson. Jack Houser, Georgia Ledford, Hubert Mau ney, Odus Neill, W. T. Robinson, Lester Houser, Hillard Harrel son, Will Beatty, and Misses Lu nez Houser, Edith Hoyie, Lawton Hoyle, Annie Shuford and Min nie Coleman. After a short business session was held during which fime it was voted to donate the offering, which was $30.00 to the fund for the purchase of new robes ior the choir. T'he class was dismis sed with a prayer by Mrs. J. W. Payne. The Cheriyville Readers Club The Cherryville Readers Club held its regular meeting at the home of Mrs. M. A. Stroup, Fri day night, April 13, at 8 o’clock. After the business meeting, Mrs. Heman Hall gave a most helpful discussion on Juvenile Delinquency, in which she point ed out reasons for, ways of hand ling and results of juvenile de linquency on society. Mrs. Hillard R. Harrelson re viewed the life of Howard Spring author of “Hard Facts.’’ A delicious dessert coufse was served by the hostess. Members o fthe club are Mes dames Howard W. Allran, Mal colm Aiken, Heman R. Hall, Hil lard R. Harrelson, Dewey F. Beam, Hunter Carroll, T. A. Car ter, Hunter Rudisill, Howard Robinson, Garland Sherrill, Em mett Houser, and M. A. Stroup. Young Woman's Auxiliary Meets The Young Woman’s Auxiliary of the First Baptist Church met Tuesday evening at the home of Mis. M. C. Beam. Miss Ollie Sue Kendrick, president had charge during a short business session. Reports were given by each chair man of the committee, on what they had been doing to promote the work. Miss Carolyn Allen had charge of the program and the theme for study was “Missions”. Miss Allen and Miss Kate Whitworth gave interesting parts, elveryone present felt that that they were inspired by the" splendid pro gran.. /ill members are urged to remember that May 6th, w»ll be Y. Her son has been over seas more than three years, me luncheon set has Hawaii Islands painted in the center with other designs painted on each corner and the small napkins are fring ed around the edge with one paint ing on the corner. Summer A Memorial Service for Pfc. Benjamin 'll. Summer was held Sunday April 15 at 4 o’clock at St. John’s Lutheran Church of which he was a member. Services 'were in charge of the pastor, Rev. VV.G. Cobb, assisted by Rev. E. S. Elliott, pastor of the First Bap i.ett, pastor of the First Methodi.t Church. In the procession of flags the flags were carried by Captain .James \V. Allran and Lt. Ben R. Rudisill. Pfc. Summer, 24, is a son of Mrs. Thomas Carl Summer and the late Mr. Summer. He was killed in action in France on Feb ruary 1, 1945. Pfc. Summer en tered the service June 24, 1944, and received his basic training at Camp Blanding, Fla. He was transferred to Fort Meade, Md. December and was shipped Janu ary 1, 1945. He landed in Eng land and was in France when he was k.iled on the first day "f Feb ruary. He was born March 31, 1920, and received his education from the Cherryville Public Schools. He was married to Miss Ruth George, August 20, 1939. Before entering the service he was em ployed by the Dixie Lumber Co. owned and operated by his father In addition to his wife and mother, Pfc. Summer is survived by two children, Barbara, 4, and Ben. .Jr., 2, together with the fol lowing brothers and sisters. Carl yle Summer, Mrs. Norman Payne, Betty Jane Summer all of Cher ryville, Mrs. J. A. Wilkinson of Wadesboro and George Summei of the Navy’. Also surviving is a giandl'ather, T. E. Summer and a grandmother, Mrs. N. B. Ken drick, both of Cherryville. His father died August 10. 1944. Cherryville Woman”s Club To Meet The Cherryville Woman's Club will hold its April meeting at the Xuway Club House on Tuesday afternoon, April 24, at 3:45 o' clock. Funeral Services Held For Charlie Hendrick Funeral services were conduc ted from the home Friday after noon at 4 o'clock for Charlie R. Hendrick. The services were in charge of Rev. W. E. lsenhower of Hiddenite, formerly of Cherry ville, assisted by Rev. E. S. Elliott pastor of the First Baptist church Burial was made in the New Memorial Cemetery. Mr. Hendrick died Wednesday, April 11, at the Reeves Hospital in Lincolnton following a stroke suffered the Saturday before. His passing was a shock to his loved ones and his many friends, and he will be greatly missed by all. Surviving are his wife and four step children, his mother and fath er and several brothers and sis ters.
