C., spent the week-end here the guests of the former’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cluyton Carpenter. Mrs. Kenneth Duke and little son, Gene, from Kingstree, S. C., are spending the week here the guests of Mrs. Dudley Camp. Mrs. A. B. Morrow, Jr., is spending this week in New Or leans, La., with her husband, Pvt. A. B. Morrow, Jr. Pvt. Robert C. Harrelson is in the Field Artillery Replacement Training Center, at Fort Bragg for basic military training. He has been assigned to Battery U, 9th Bat. 3 F. A. Tng. Regiment. Af ter his initial training he will be transferred to a field organization Mrs. J. D. Carpenter and little 'daughter, Faye, who have been spending the past few weeks at Carolina Beach returned home this week. Mrs. Carpenter has been with her sister-in-law, Mrs. Flay Wise, who underwent a seri ous operation at Bullock Hospital. Wilmington. Her manv friends will be glad to know she is Im proving. Mrs. Emmett Houser and Mrs. Malcolm Aiken spent the week end in Gastonia the guests of the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Craig Wilson. Mrs. Hou ser was matron of honor in the wedding of her sister, Miss Doro thy Wilson and S. Sgt. Muriel D. Lee of Lawndale. The marriage took place at Union Presbyterian church in Gastonia Sunday after noon at five o’clock. Auxiliary Meeting Thursday, May 24th The Auxiliary meeting will be held Thursday (today) May 24th, at 8:15 at the home of Mrs. Blanche Beam with Mrs. Beam and Miss Helen Mauney as joint hostesses. Miss Hobbs Honored At Lovely Party Miss Ava Houser and Mrs. Bill Fitzhugh charmingly entertained a. a lovely dessert-bridge, at the home of the former on Wednes day night, honoring Miss Gwen Hobbs, whose marriage to Raleigh Jackson Putnam, Petty Officer, will take place Wednesday, Mav 30th. An ellective arrangement of beautiful roses added to the at tractiveness of the rooms where the guests found their places at unpointed tables. Each table was centered with a vase of roses. The home was beautifully decorated with Madonna lilies and other lovely spring flowers. The meeting was called to order by Mrs. James L. Putnam, leader and Mrs. Putnam conducted the ' devotional, her topic being, “At the Door of the Heme”, The roll was called and dues collected by Mrs. Howard George, Secretary. The program for May was the “Christian Home.’’ Mrs. L. P. Barnett discussed “The Christian Home in America,” Mrs. C. A. Nix discussed the “Christian Home in Africa”, and Mrs. James L. Putnam discussed “Life in In dia”. The hostess assisted by Misses Marianna and Edwina Houser served refreshments to the following: Mrs. L.P. Barnett, Mrs. Ambrose Hendrick, Mrs. C. A. The June meet ing will be held with Mrs. Hillard Harrelson. The group was dismiss ed with a prayer by Mrs. L. P. Barnett. Mrs. Houser Honors Sister Bride-Elect Mrs. Emmett Houser and Mrs. Malcolm Aiken were hostesses at a dessert-bridge Thursday night complimenting Mrs. Houser’s sis ter, Miss Dorothy Wilson of Gas tonia whose wedding to S. Sgt. Murrel It. Lee of Lawndale will take place this month. Covers were laid for 24 guests. Refresh ments were served upon their ar rival. Each table was centered with sweet peas and the rooms were attractively arranged with roses and other mixed flowers. Six tables of bridge and rummy were in play. The bride was most charming in a lace trimmed crepe dress of dusty rose and wore a shoulder [ bouquet of sweet peas. Another bride-elect of the season, Miss Gwendolyn Hobbs, was also pres ented with a corsage of sweet peas. Mrs. T. A. Carter received the high score in bridge while Miss Wilma Glover won the rummy prize. The bingo prize went to Miss Janet Hobbs. The brides-el ect were presented with gifts in their wedding patterns. Elliott to the effect that there will be a special Memorial Day service at the Band Stand Next Welnesday, May 30th There will be a guest speaker, but com plete plans are not yet ready. Jr. Woman’s Club Entertain Seniors The Cherryville Woman’s Club entertained the Cherryville High school Seniors, the Cherryville High School Faculty, their wives and their husbands, at a lovely banquet at the Howell Clubhouse, on Friday evening. May 18th, at 8:30 o’clock. The class flower, red lORe, and the class colors, red and white, were used throughout the decora tions. The tables were artistically decorated with white .candles and red roses. Baskets of red roses adorned the room. Attractive program booklets with a hand-painted red rose on each cover, made by Miss Sara Workman and Mrs. it. B. Porter, contained the class officers, the clabs motto, the class colors, the menu and the program. The names of tire guests, printed on the stems of the roses on the booklets, directed them to their placet. Mist Fannie Farris, president of the Woman’s Club, was toas,. mistress. The program consisted of the following: Invocation — Mrs. E. E. Mc Dowell. Welcome—Miss Fannie Farris Response—Harold Wyant “Thorns and Roses”—Mildred Cobb. “American Beauties”—Mr. W. F. Starnes. Floor Show', a Square Dance, and music by Anthony’s String band.
