1 vis statement was made today
by Mrs. Janet Hall Green, mana
ger of the Gastonia office of the
Social Security Board. She said al
so that it might mean money in
tlit pocketbooks of many 'amilies
if the public realized that some
YOUNG people are entitled to
benefits under the Federal Insur
ance system. Insured wage earn
ers who reach tin and retire, and
certain of their dependents, are
of course eligible for old-age and
survivors insurance payments;
but the idea that a person must
lie 65 years old before he or she
can get benefits is wrong. This
confusion is probably due to the
fact that the original Social Se
curity Act applied only to men
and women 65 years old or more.
But in 1 !*31> the law was changed
so that certain dependents of in
sured wage earners might also
receive payments of-social secur
ity insurance.
"The pity of it is," she added,
",hai many persons who realiy
need the benefits for which they
are eiig.ule are not getting iluni
because they have not applied .or
payments, fhe law requites tin ',
a claim must b* tiled before .>Ln.
efits can be pant.'’
Mrs. Green explained that sur
vivors of insured wage earners
entitled to monthly benefits in
clude children under lti (18 if
still in school and unmarried);
widows of any age who have min
or children in their care; and
widows who have reached age <55.
If there is no surviving widow or
child under 18. parents who are
'55 or over and who were depen
dent upon the insured wage ear
ner at the time of his death, are
eligible for monthly benefits.
Residents of Cleveland, Gaston
and Lincoln counties who have
reason to believe that they are
entitled to benefits under old-age
and survivors Insurance provis
ions should write or call at the
office of the Social Security Board
located in Room 204, National
Bank of Commerce Building, at
Gastonia, North Carolina.

In Memory of Willie
By VANCE SELLERS
At nine o’clock on Friday night,
The Eleventh Day of May,
A speeding Car came along,
And took. Willie's life away.
When 1 heard that car coming
One thing that I knew,
If that speeding car hits him,
it will mean his "Waterloo”.
5fter that car had passed on,
1 saw him lying on the street,
I knew that would be the last time
lie would ever cross his feet.
When I heard him groaning,
1 looked at his wounded head,
And within about three minutes
Poor Willie was lying there
Ifo enjoyed running cars and
barking,
Put that was dangerous fun,
And when I saw that car hit him,
I knew his earthly work was
When his breath all had gone,
1 laid him on the grass,
Near the Dormitory so his friends
Could see him as they pass.
Before I left the Casa Marina,
I looked into his face,
This; is what came in my mind:
‘No One Here to take Your Place'
Like tlie color of his body.
His brown eyes w»re full of fun,
And he has never been guilty
Of ever harming; any one.
Some of the Waitresses called
him ‘Brownie’.
Every time they saw him
around,
And he never refused the invita
tion
To go with them to town.
Brownie had a lot of friends.
And they were really swell,
Lucky and Pancho were his best,
And all lived around Casa
Marina Hotel.
While on duty late at night.
If Brownie hndnrt come around
In the recreation hall, on the
I would find hint sleeping sound
Most animals that are killed,
Usually bleed a lot,
But, in the street or on the grass, |
I didn’t even see one spot. |
I
All that night I thought of Willie, 1
Lying there, not making a
sound, '
Just like a man. without friends :
or money.
To bury him in the ground.
No one there to pray or sing, |
Or tell where he had been. i
Even he is a forgotten animal, i
Although a dog is a man’s best
Friend. i
M’ MuCown was good to him,
A' unv one could be,
body was wrapped in a hag, i
