I am thank ful that I have a home, school [ CHARACTER THAT IS A GEM The law and principal of truth Must be obesrved by all, From childhood through the days of youth That we may never fall; And then the right must be pursued And honesty possessed; The life with love must be endued, And faults must be confessed. The character that is a gem Is never had by chance; It must be made within the realm Of laws fixed in advance; And of these laws we wish to speak Which bring men to their goal, . Where they are great and good and meek, 1 With noble heart and soul. The mind must think on noble things, The soul be filled with grace; We must fo(rget the many stings That would becloud the face, And look to God in humble prayer, i Be kind and pure and good; For other3 we must always care, And stand where saints have stood. i The way of sin must be refused And habits must be clean; The morals must not be abused, And nothing low v.m m< un Must be allowed to dwell within, Nty- reign where Gel 1 si. stuy, If with our character we win A crown of life some day. The character that is a gem Is better far to own Than all the wealth of ev’ry realm. Or fame, or crown, or throne; For all that’s good and fine and grand Goes into such a soul, And when at Heaven’s throne we stand 'Twill be the highest goal. —Walter E. Isenhour, Hiddenite, N. C. “OUR BOYS” From the crack of a baseball bat in a farmers pasture, to the roar of guns and the scraping sound of landing barges against enemy shores, went CherryvUle's younger men. They write us from the South Pacific, from Europe and Africa and tell us of then many battle participations and engagements. Lots of our men are coming home, and for this we are happy, and thankful, and praise God,—but many are still there, and by there, we mean ouurselves—in battle scared, disease racked cities of uncivili zation. They have been on a fence where death lurked on one side, life and freedom on the other, their American intuition, fair ness and love of God had done Us to return them to their loved nes and their ^“dom. Some will never return, but war was responsible. The Army has taken credit, the Marines nave taken glory, the Air Forces nave gotten the gravey etc. But without either the war with our aggressors would have been hope less. We won. Not because we had a big Army, or a tremendous war machine, but because we had a reason to fight as we did. We fought for what was right. Not only right in our eyes, but in the eyes of God. Let’s take a case> for examP*e of one singular young man. We won’t take a boy from the Army for we see and talk with Army boys every day—We’ll eliminate the Marines, for there aren’t many Marines from Cherryville. Lets take for example some one from the Navy. Without the Navy — Well, the Navy landed our troops, and anchored off the coasts of our enemys strongholds and bombarded the harbors, ihey earned food through thousands of miles of torpedo infested forces for our expeditionary task forces. For the Navy we are greatful. For those brave kids that belong [to the Navy team we are more greatful. Lets take a boy we all have known since he wore short pants. W’e went to school with him, watched him at play, at work, and watched him leave for the war. So far he writes he has been to: Halifax, Canada, St. J,ohns Newfoundland, England, Scot land, Ireland, (Casablanca, Iran, Algiers, Bierzerta) all in North ^Africa. Panma (Canal Zone) and church to go to. FRED McSWAIN I AM THANKFUL FOR I am thankful that God has taken care of me these years, and all that he has given me this yea*. He has taken care of me for nine years, and we should be thankful to God. „TXTXIT£, HERMAN McGINNIS . Need a . LAXATIVE?
