benefits of following a good soil
conservation program. In one
eleven-acre field Mr. Stowe has
been following a two-year rota
tion system of cotton followed by
small grain and lespedeza for the
past six years. The lespedeza
seed Is combined, and the litter
turnd under before cotton. He
planted Coker No. 7, fertilized
with 400 lbs. 4-10-6 per acre.
Mr. Stowe had thi3 to say, I har
vested twenty bales off that
eleven acres and its the best cot
ton 1 ever raised on the farm, and
its paying me to turn under ev
erything I can”. That’s nearly
two bale* to the acre and a pret
ty good sign that conservation
farming is profitable farming.
N. M. Carson, R-l, Gastonia,
located west of Gastonia on the
Kingfe Mountain highway recently
ordered 2000 loblolly pine< from
the State Nursery for planting
on idle and eroding land this win
ter. Mr. Carson has a fine young
stand of pines planted about five
years ago in cooperation with the
Soil Conservation District pro
gram, that are beginning to show
up, some of which are 12-15 ft.
high. Planting pines is an excel
lent way to put loafing land to
work producing an income and
being an asset to the farm.
Terarce lines were staked re
cently to be built by the County
Terracing units and by farm e»
quipment on the following farms:
C. E. Honeycutt, R-3, Gastonia;
B. B. Bynum, Aleris; Edgar
Abernethy and Dewey O’Daniel,
R-l, Stanley;, and Shelby and
McGinnis farms, Crouse.
