Hickory's Robbins Area's Top Hitter • BY RONALD KISER • Red Robbins, a standout at Morganton, later at Hickory, fin ished atop the hit parade in Area Four play this season. The red head garnered 23 hits in 49 trips to the plate for a sizzling .463 mark. Robbins scored nine times, batted in 30 tallies. Hickory’s top hurler, Jack CUr tis, actually finished ahead of Robbins but since he had been to bat only 18 times, Robbins was considered the winner. Curtis, w'ho lost his first game of the season last Friday night at Gastonia, hit safely 10 times in 18 tries for a .656 mark. Othr .400 hitters were Roger Sheppard-Gastonia, Bill Watts-Hickory, and Don Killian Gastonia. Topping the Cherryrille outfit at bat was First Baseman Dave Gardner with a .303 average on 20 for 66. Second and third in the local hit parade went to C. E. Mc Corkle and Jim Lineberger. Bob Lineberger and Joe Hallman top ped the Cherryville hill staff. There were eight. unbeaten pitchers in the area this season, Gastonia’s Sheppard winning live with Larry Earp of Charlotte and Jack Curtis joining another Gas tonian, Froneberger, in copping four in a row. It would be educational and would bring happiness to children. Provisions for meals and snacks, along with recreational activities, must be planned since outdoor sports create hearty appetites. Here is a guide for snacks and meals at a day camp. Children should have had a nourishing breakfast. Plana for a mid-morning—cold, flesh or canned fruit juice and crackers. In the afternoon milk or milk drinkns may be served with cookies. One partially hot mid-day meal should be served—from home or NOTICE ! TIPS FOR HOME SAFETY— An unfrilled apron is less of a fire hazard than one with ruffles. Flat pockets on aprons are not as apt to get caught on handles. Dust cloths that are used for furniture polishing and other household 'tasks requiring the use of oil, as well as paint cloths, should be placed in a covered jar or metal container when not in GARDEN TIME By Robert Schmidt While we are between crops, in a sense, we should be thinking of ways to improve our garden soils. Much needed organic matter mav be added through the use of stable manures or summer and fall green crops to be turned under. These materials will make heavy soils easier to work and will give sandy soils a better water-holding capacity and along with that, there is the added fer tility. But what I wish to talk about is soil acidity and the use of lime. Many gardeners do not under stand the proper use of lime be cause they do not know the needs of the individual crops. Also, they do not know how acid their soil is. It is foolish to add lime to soil if you do not know that it needs lime or that the crops to be grown require more lime. Lime reduces soil acidity. Most vegetable crops will thrive in slightly acid (ph 6 to 6.7) soils but there are a number of them that will not thrive at all in very acid (ph 4.5 to 5-0) soils — these are asparagus, spinach, onions, celery, lettuce, beets, muskmelons, cauliflower, broccoli, parsnips, okra and salsify. Crops such as beans, cucumbers, watermelons, corn, sweet potatoes, Irish pota toes and tomatoes are quite toler ant of very acid soils—in fact, it is desirable for watermelons. It is also desirable to grow Irish potatoes on quite acid soils in Or der to prevent the development of potato scab, a serious disease which is made worse by liming the soil. The soil testing laboratory of Leonora Ruffo rebuffs Franco Silva in this scene from spectacular Lippert release “THE QUEEN OF SHEBA.” Starting Wednesday at ►he ROSELAND DRIVE-IN THEATRE. I the N. C. Department of Agricul ture, Raleigh, will teat your soil free of charge and tell you how nuch lime to use. That leaves no sxcuse for not knowing the cor rect acidity of your soil. Take lamples by slicing the soil with a ipade or trowel to a depth of four to six inches. This will give you soil from the top as well as lower iown. Thoroughly mix and send ibout one pint to the laboratory, [f your garden is large take swn ales form more than one location. It is possible that your county agent has equipment for making simple soil tests.
