On October 13, travelers who take a side trip to 6,286-foot high Roan Mountain can attend a mile high auction sale of Christmas trees conducted by the U- S. For est Service at 10 a. m. Some 30, 000 selected Balsam Fir and Red Spruce trees, their trunks marked with yellow paint to indicate that they have been approved for cut ting, will be sold to dealers from half a dozen states. The Christ newly paved Forest Service road mas tree forests are along the connecting with Highway 261, 12 covered with grassy meadows, miles from Bakersville. Roan Mountain, an enormous plateau rhododendron and evergreens, of fers magnificent vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains and of Mount Mitchell, highest peak east of the Mississippi {6,684 feet). Summer spent September in the North Carolina mountains this has been no frost to cause prema ture turning of the leaves. Obser- , vers predict that the solor peak* will occur within the middle two weeks of the month dnd linger on year, with the result that there until November. On the Blue Ridge Paricway just south of Cumberland Knob, the ground color is bright with maples and black gum. Between the Parkway’s intersection with Highways 18 and 16 there is ex cellent color in spot sections of sumac, dogwood, m«mle> gum and sourwood. Maples are bright in the camp and trailer areas of Ooughton Park, largest recrea tional area on the Parkway, and just north of Blowing Rock there is a spectacular contrast between the green of pines and the yellow of birche#. There is considerable color _ at higher elevations in the Asheville area, as well as in the Great Smokies, in the Waterfall Country along U. S. 64, and in the vicinity of Mount Pisgah and Hickory Nut Gorge. Kings Are Jumping On Carolina Coast King mackerel, big ones and acres of them, are jumping in fa vorite North Carolina fishing waters from Cape Lookout to Southport, and enough good catches of the big fellows—up to 16 pounde—have been made to cause charter boat captains to herah) a banner fall salt water fishihg season. Looking north to “Gameiish Junction”, Cape Hatteras and the Outer Banks are into their aut umn channel bass run. A 44 1-2 pounder won the first surf fishing I tournament on Hatteras Island, j heralding good fishing for the third annual Nags Head Surf fish, 'ing Tournament Oct. 22-24. Teams from five states as far north as New York are expected to participate. One of the first big strikes of the kings was made by Captain Leroy Gould of the “Mattie G” fishing just south of Bouy 13 off Atlantic Beach. Fishing with him, A1 Geremonte, sports editor of the Asheville Citizen, and party accounted for 11 of the big fel lows. Charter boats operating out of Southport also reported success with kings, with Captain Hulan Watts of the “Idle On IV” get ting 25 kings in one day. Similar reports are coming from Carolina and Wrightsville beaches and Sha lotte. The sensational sailfish run off the Southeast North Carolina coast went into October when Captain Watts took three off Southport, but bluefish are taking most of the headlines as boat after boat comes in with between 50 and 160 of blues, sprinkled with good catches of Spanish mackerel. Some veteran fishermen contend that when the kings are jumping their aren’t biting, and that the catches so far are very much preliminary to heavy catches to come later in October and up to Thanksgiving. They recall the record catches of last November by boats operating out of Sha lotte, Carolina and Wrightsville Beaches and north to Morehead City, where the heaviest catches were made. Electronic Determine When Bees To Swarm The highly-technical realm of electronics seems far removed from the practical field of bee keeping, vet an electronics en gineer with the British Broad casting Corporation nas come up with an instrument that could be come valuable to the beekeeper. It can be used to determine when bees are going to swarm! The BBC engineers found that the normal 180 cycle hum of bees in a hive swells to a warble note of 250 cycles at swarming time. The differences can be detected by a selective form of micro phone. W. A. Stephen, extension bee keeper at State College, says the discovery could result in saving time and money at present spent on physical ex&mination of the hives and will also prevent the loss of swarms. iStephen says the up-to-date beekeeper may be pictured as sit ting comfortably by a radio am plified, enjoying the amplified hum of his bees working industriously for him. Not until the tone changes, need he exert himself. Drought Assistance May Be Life Saver The new agricultural conserva tion practice of vegetative cover may prove a life saver to drought-hit farmers in North Carolina this fall, according to H. D. Godfrey of the State Agri cultural Stabilisation and Con servation office. 'Under this practice recently approved for most counties, farm ers mav apply at their County ASC office for federal cost-shar ing in the establishment- of a vegetative cover this Fall fdr winter protection from erosion and to help meet emergency needs for grazing, hay, and soil protec tion created by extreme drought. Originally approved for 51 counties including those desig nated as drought emergency I counties, in 1953, Godfrey says that because of extended dry con ditions, the practice is now ap proved for almost every county ii the state. He says many coun ties are extending their final seeding dates in order that needed conservation may still be estab lished when rain finally comes. Godfrey reminded Tar Heel farmers that widespread lack of rainfall will make additional grazing or hay, that might be made available undedr this prac tice, very valuable as well as pro tecting the soil from washing away as well as protecting the soil from washing away when rain comes. Tenant Farmer Saves For The Future Tenant farming is O K. is you save for the future. That’s the oninion of Amos Dillanhunt, Negro tenant farmer of Trenton, Route 1. Although he doesn’t own his own farm, young Dillanhunt be lieves that a hard-working tenant farmer who is thrifty can make a success farming. Amos and his wife. Cone]], are looking forward to the day when their dream of a nets home is realized. When it comes, all of the furnishings will be paid for. Jones County Negro Farm Agent Sherman N. Shelton sayR that when Amos sells a bunch of pigs, he buys something for the house such as gas stove or refrig erator. Realistically, the Dillanhunts had rataher put their hard-earned money into something a little more nermanent than a new car. With such a down to earth atti tude how can they fhil, Shelton doesn’t think they will.
