Stroup spent several days last week in Gastonia with her son, Dr. and Mrs. M. A. Stroup, and attended the Little Theatre Play, “Kind Sir.” Dr. and Mrs. H. H. Allen spent Sunday in Anderson, S. C., at the Memorial Hospital with their dau ghter, Mrs. James Anderson and little grand-daughter, Alicia Car ol Anderson, born, Friday, De cember 3rd. The many friends of Mrs. He man R. Hall will be glad to know she is getting along nicely at the Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gas tonia where she underwent an op eration last Friday morning. Ervin Schulman of Bessemer City spent the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. A. Galloway. Miss Shirley Allen daughter of Dr. and 'Mlrs. H. H. Allen, and student at the University of South Carolina was initiated into Signia Alpha Signia, National honorary fraternity, on Novem ber 15th, at the College The many friends of Mr. R. G. McLurd will be glad to know he is improving nicely at the Pres byterian Hospital in Charlotte and is expected to be home in a few more days. The many friends of Mrs. Blanch Heavner will be glad to know she is getting along nicely at the Richard Baker Hospital in Hickory, where she underwent an operation last Thursday morning. The public is invited and urg ed to attend this fine program. A/lc Betha Deaver Wed To Capt. Huff Fairfield, Calif—A|lc Betha L. Deaver, daughter of Mir. and Mrs. Harry V. Deaver of 622 North Dixon Street, Cherryville, was married to Captain Bill Huff, sta tioned at Hawaii on Wednesday, December 1st, at 3:30 o’clock at Travis Air Force Base in Cali fornia. A!lc Deaver was station ed at Kelly Air Force Base in Texas. She has been in service since August 24th, 1951 and has received the good conduct medal. Captain and Mrs. Huff will make their home in Hawaii. MISS LOY STROUP ATTENDED MEETING IN RALEIGH 'M'iss Loy Stroup was in Raleigh last Wednseday attending the an nual meeting of the Raonoke Is land Historical Association of w hich sne is a member by Gover nor appointment. It appears from the report that the show lost some money during the last year. There were several troubles for 'he past year. Particularly the lo s of attendance caused by the ihurricane Hazel and other such trouble®. It was reported that the hurricanes are reported a week in advance at times. The Elizabethan Garden is one of the most interesting things ponsored by the Association. They expect great progress to be made during the coming year as they have a gardener to have charge and to spend $160,000.00. It will within afew years be the show place of the state. The death sentence is a severe penalty to pay for breaking a traffic • laiv. But figure? from the State Department of Motor Ve hicles show that over three fourths of all drivers involved in last year’s fatal accidents were violating some traffic law. Kathleen Ragan , Circle Meets The December meeting of the Kathleen Ragan Circle of St. John’s Lutheran Church was held at the home of Mlrs. Gary Allran on Monday night at 7:30 o’ The meeting was called to or der by the Vice Chairman, Mrs. Roy Houser in the absence of the Chairman. Mrs. Bill Rhyne, Program leader, then took charge and Mrs. Dwight Jenks read the scripture. The topic, “Christ Is Born A gain” was introduced by the Narrator, Mrs. Heber Eaker. The program was divided into seven parts, including the Prologue, Christ is born Again in Bethle hem, in Liberia, in Europe, in Japan, in India and United Chris tendom Encircles the World. The leader was assisted by Mrs. Heber Eaker, Mrs. Dwight Jenks, Mlrs. Gary Allran, Mrs. Stewart Shumate, Mrs. Paul Crocker, Mis. Lawrence Costner, Mrs. Norman Warlick, Mlrs. Roland Ferguson, Miss Betty Sheel.v and Miss La vinia Rudisill. The program was closed with singing “Joy To The World,” foil owed by prayer led by Mrs. Bill Rhyne. The business session was con ducted by Mrs. Roy Houser. The Secretary read the minutes of the last meeting and called the roll. The treasurer gave a re port and collected the envelopes. The Vice Chairman gave a report on the fall fellowship dinner and read a letter from Mrs. D. R. The meeting was called to order by the presi dent, Mrs. George Falls, and the hy.mn, “Joy to the World’’ was •uvg. Mr*. Falls led a Christmas meditation on the subject, “Light” based on the gospel of John. The minutes of the previous meeting were read by the secretary, Mrs. Ralph Hoyle, and were approved by the society. Mlrs. Falls thanked the society for the splendid at tendance and interest shown dur ing the Week of Prayer and ex pressed gratification for the gen erous Lottie Moon offering for Foreign Missions and pledged her self and her loyalty to the Wom an’s Missionary Society. Mrs. Falls then presented Mrs. R. T. McGinnis who was in charge of the program, “How Far Is It To Bethlehem Town?” IMlrs. W. N. American Legion Aux. Meets; Honors Gold Star Mothers Mrs. L L. Summer, Mirs. W. D. Browne, and Miss Helen Mauney were hoste.-ses at the December meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary on Friday evening at the home of Mrs. Summer. The meeting was called to order by the president, Mrs. J. Garland Sherrill. The Pledge of Allegi ance to the American Flag was giyen by the group and the Pre amble to the Constitution of the American Legion was repeated in unison. Mrs. L. L. Summer conducted the devotions. She read scripture from Luke and closed with pray The minutes of the November meeting were read by the secre tary, Mrs. Robert H. Beam, and the treasurer’s report was given by Miss Helen Mauney. A love offering for veterans at Oteen Hospital '<Svas taken! This offering was made instead of exchanging gifts. The Gold Star Mothers were honored. Reverend Beam is a native of Lincoln County, having lived near Cherryville. Mys. Beam is former ly of Kannapolis and Hickory. Both were graduated from Lenoir Rhyne College in 1949, and Rev. Beam received his diploma from the Lutheran Theological South ern Seminary in 1962. They have lived at Gibsonville since then, where Rev. Beam is pastor of Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church. They have two other children, Jonathan Mark and Noel Alis Rev. Beam is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J- Ray Beam of Flay, N. C.
