CARL BEAM it-J26 i FRIEL QUINN PASTURE SEEPING Farmer friends, let me remind you that the spring pasture seed ing season is just around the cor ner and perhaps you may be able to sow the grass that old man weather would not let you get in last fall. Although we will have to admit that the spring seeding season is second choice to the sow ing season in the Fall. In many cases, however, it is very success ful, and there are times when we have to do things when we can. Some farmers report that they like the spring season ever better. Let me remind you also that good pastures are the basis for any successful and profitable live stock enterprise. Farmers who provide at least 1 1-2 to 2 acres of good permanent and 1-2 acre of supplementary pasture per cow roport that their feeding worries are pretty well solved if the for age during surplus periods is taken care of in the* form of sil age or hay. Of course, there is always that element of the weath er and many of you farmers have had discouraging results these past three years with your pas tures. We hope as always that this will not continue but that is the chance we have to take to he Suppose we pet into the differ ent classes of livestock and see wheat we think is best for each. For dairy cattle we will recom mend Ladino Clover - Orchard Grass mixture sowed at the rate of 2 to 2 1-2 pounds of clover and 10 to 15 pounds of press. Admit ting that orchard grass docs not prow as late in the fail nor as much in dry weather, we still have to recommend it because dairy cows eat it much better than they do clover-fescue mix tures. It is not a bad idea to have some clover-fescue pasture fenc ed off where the cows can be iso lated on it just in case it is need ed. For dairy cows at least, 1 1-2 acres should he provided per cow and 1 acre for each heifer over 9 months old. For beef- cattle, two acres of well fertilized Ladino - grass pas ture per cow will provide the basic feed requirements. Ladino Tall Fescue mixture can be high 1> recommended for beef cattle ns they eat it well and it seems to grow very good in this area even better than Clover-Orchard grass in many cases. Supplemental grazing fot dairy and beef cattle should consist of lespedeza. small grains, kudzu, Sudan grass, crimson clover and alfalfa provided at the rate of 1-2 acre ner cow-. Contrary to popular belief alfalfa can be grazed with out hurting the stand too much if the cows are put on it about the time it is ready to cut for hay and taken off as soon as it is eat en down. Cattle should be kept off until the alfalfa begins to bloom again. Even though hogs are not pri marily roughage consuming ani mals. good pastures will save a large portion of the feed bill and frequently make the difference between profit and loss on the swine enterprise. S Sellers tf their value as feed, pastures, properly rotated, are >an impor tant part of an creative sanita tion program. The legumes, par ticularly Ladino clover and alfalfa, are excellent swine pas ture crops. Temporary pastures of small grains, crimson clover, rape, sudan grass and soybeans should. be used when other pas tures are not growing. For a sow and 2 litter* of you should have 1-2 acre of permanent pas ture and 1-2 acre of temporary pasture for the year. Good pastures provide the best diet at the cheapest cost for a flock of breeding sheen. If green pasture can be at the rate of 4-10 acre per ewe the year around, it will provide all or nearly all of the feed required for the production of fat market lambs. If properly managed, sheep will aid in controlling the weeds in -pastures, and they do not dam age pastures for other classes of livestock. Sheep and cattle are a very good combination to run together. The dry summers we nave naa has brought forth much interest in the old stand-by Dallis grass. Dallis grass is rated fair and does grow fairly well in dry weather, better than some of the other grasses. It can be seeded with Ladino clover, but seeding must be in the spring. In many cases a stand is quite hard to establish because all the seed do ndt germ inate the same year and those that do come up are slow grow ing early in the spring. Dallis grass contains leas nutrients than orchard and fescue grasses and will produce less forage. We can not recommend this grass too highly because of its limitations. We are sure that you. could do !- ■ttcr normally. Seeding rates for Dallis grass is from 12-15 (rounds per acre and the best -•ceding time i« early March for this area. On areas where Dallis grass is established, it will no doubt pay you to k"ep it. Dry weather has brought anoth er grass into the limelight the past year or so. Coastal Bermuda grass is easily established but dif ficult to eradicate. Tt does make a good pasture when grown with Dixie Crimson Clover. Coastal Bermuda must be propagated y vegetative cuttings because it has few or no seed. The most common way to get a Bermuda sod start ed is to set rootstocks ;n 4 foot rows. 4 feet apart in the rows. This requires about .'>,000 sprigs per acre. April and May are the Vest months to plant Bermuda, but it can be planted in the fall or winter if stocks are planted deep enough to keep them from freezing. When planting in spring use 400 pounds of 8-9-8 fertilizer per acre in the row. Overseed the first fall with 20 pounds of Dixie Crimson Clover usirg 500 pounds of 0-14-14 or equivalent each fa'I. Without Crimson Clover use 500 pounds of 0-14-14 plus 50 to 100 pounds of nitrogen again in June. No nitrogen is necessary when grown with Crimson clover. A good pasture program based on enough, well fertilized Ladino grass mixtures with ample sup plementary grazing will give us most of the gracing we need in a normal season, however, it is not a bad idea to explore ard have some of the others available for abnormal seaswns like we have been having.
