SHELBY LIONS HERE FRIDAY FOR AA TEST -SPORTS BY RONALD KISER [ Catawba Indians Host Powerful E^st Carolina This Week Catawba’s Indians, fresh from a 12-6 upset of highly regarded Newberry last weekend, takes on East Carolina’s powerful Bucs this Saturday night at Salisbury. This is the game of the week in the tough North State Confer East Carolina, regarded by many as the team to beat in the North State this Season, lost last weekend 7-6 to Lenoir-Rhyne’s up-and-coming Bears at Creen ville. Thus with star passer Dick Cherry in fine shape, the game at 1 Shuford Field on the Catawha campus shapes up as one of the •state’s better contests this week. Saturday’s contest will be Catawba’s first in family play. They lost by 26-0 to Davidson m the season opener, then traveled to Newberry last Saturday to edge the Redskins 12-6. The week before, Newberry downed Fur man 14-0. Coach Clyde Biggers was ap parently well pleased with his club’s performance at Newberry. Rated among the dark horses in the tough seven-team loop this season, the game Saturday will go a long way towards determining the fate of the Indians in the loop i ba.-e. The defeat was the third in a row for Cherryville following an opening victory over Mt. Holly. The Ironmen took the opening kickoff and with star Ronald Tur ner running at full steam, moved into Mountaineer territory hut Sim Carlton's rock defense stop lied the locals on the 40. Taking the punt on their own four yard line '.after drawing a 15 yard pen alty for clipping, the visitors struck in two plays for the game's first touchdown. Moral Valentine, the big 190 pound fullback, pick ed up 15 on the first play with John McGinnis, the unsung hero of the Kings Mountain club’s three victories thus far, then tak ing a hand-off from Quarterback George Harris, rated off tackle, broke into the clear, and sped 81 yards to pay dirt. Valentine intercepted a Roy Daggerhart pass and the Mountaineers went .'10 yards for a touchdown with Jerry McCarter going over from the three. Again Stewart’s kick split the uprights for a 14-0 KM halftime lead. Carlton’s forces took the sec ond half kick-off and moved 69 yards to pay territory. Valentine, McCarter. McGinnis, and Harris sparked the drive which required 14 plays. Valentine scored from the 10 with Stewart kicking the point after. Shelby TD Favorite For 7:30 Tilt One of the oldest and keenest rivalries in the Tar Heel state„ is carded for this weekend when Shelby meets Cherryville under the lights here. A packed house is expected for the 7:;)o bout Fri day. Coaches Casey Morris and Lloyd Little have their Lions in a five-way tie for first place in the Southwest AA loop at present with a 1 -(I mark with Cherryville in the basement, with a mark of no wins, three losses. Anything, however, can happen in high school football and usually does in this heated series. Shelby will be flavored by a touchdown. Their ranks deflated by gradu ation last spring.' Coaches Morris and Little were forced to search for new talent. They opened the season with a 21.-0 defeat at the hands of a good Hickory eleven, looked anything but the South west champs of last season. The local Ironmen have also been scouted by the Lion mentors oil .three occasions. Wayne McSwain and Johnny Aull top Shelby on Roy Daggerhart, Ronald Tur ner, Darrell Carpenter, Raul (linn and Paul Taylor were all injured in the Kings Mountain bout, hut Daggerhart, Turner. Carpenter, and (linn are expected to be ready for Shelby. Carroll Carpen ter will again open at the fullback slot with Vance Schrum at guard, Lurry Kilby at tackle. Turner needs hut 225 yards to reach the 1,000 figure in total offense. Against .VTt. Holly, Bel mont, Lineolnton, and Kings Mountain, the speedy tailback has accounted for 775 yards.
