Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Baker of South Norfolk spent Sunday with Mrs. Baker’s mother, Mrs. Eula Medlin. Gates Mrs. H. W. Collins and Ray mond Collins, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rice of Sunbury spent Sunday in Portsmouth, the guests of Mrs. Collins’ brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Hay A. Poston. SOCIETY Carter HDC Hostess At Card Party The Carter home demonstra tion club entertained their fami lies with a card party in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hertelle Hofler, Hobbsville, on Saturday night, October 16 with 32 pre sent. Guests besides the husbands and children included: Mrs. Julian P. Boyd, Princeton, N. J.; Mrs. Lloyd Carter, Hobbs ville; Mrs. Woodrow White, Gatesville; Mr. Charles Blair, Gatesville; Miss Ona Patterson; Gatesville; Miss Nell Louise Carter, E. C. T. C., Greenville and Miss Iola Hofler, Hobbs ville. Mrs. Hertelle Hofler greeted the guests and Mrs. Earl Hofler, with the assistance of Miss Iola Hofler presided over the regis tration table. There were six tables of set beck with the lucky winner of the door prize being' Mr. Earl Hofler. His prize was $1 in War Stamps. Refreshments were served by the club members consisting of ham, biscuits, cucumber pickle, salted peanuts, chocolate and lemon meringue pie, hot cof fee with sugar and cream and cold drinks. Edwards-Askew Vows Are Spoken On October 16 Suffolk, Va. — A wedding of unusual interest was solemnized Saturday night October 16 at the home of the officiating mini ster, the Rev. R. E. Brittle, on the North Carolina highway, when Miss Mary Helen Askew, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Her bert Askew, of Gatesville, be came the bride of Robert Ed wards, son of Mrs. Ernest Ed wards, of Whaleyville, and the late Mr. Edwards. The bride was attired in a fall three-piece suit of green wool, with luggage tan acces sories and a corsage of garden ias. Her maid of honor, Miss Lottie Askew, wore a costume suit of tan wool with brown accessories and a corsage of yellow roses. The bridegroom was attended by his best man, Grover Bran ton. The ring service was used. Others present were Miss May belle Edwards, Mrs. Fitzhugh Dougherty and Jane Dougherty, Joseph Ward, William H. As kew and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Taylor. After a wedding trip to the mountains of North Caro lina, Mr. and Mrs. Edwards will reside in Whaleyville. LEAGUE MEETS The Epworth League of Par kers Methodist church met Fri day night, October 8, with Clif ton and Thomas Barnes. The president, Audrey Jones, presided. A worship program was given, with several mem bers taking part. A social hour was enjoyed. KILL FOUR DEER Members of the Gates com munity hunting club killed four deer Saturday morning. Two -of the four deer were divided among the members on the hunt and the other two were placed in ice plant for a bar becue in the near, future. TRANSFERRED Aviation students Emmet L. Riddick and Philip Matthews have been transferred from Kesler Field, Miss, to Centenary College, Shreveport, La, for a course of study. AUDITS BOOKS Mrs. Helen M. Steinber, aucJi tor of A. T. She now holds a secretarial position in Washington. Mr. Ryther, a graduate of New York University, is a mem ber of the armed forces and is stationed at Newark, N. J.
