Council and Helen Page ^ ^ivey Win in Canning Contests $78.67 Short Of Drive Goal Gates county Tuesday was $78.67 short of its $2,821 in the United War Fund drive with a report from Hazletts township not filed with Robin Hood, chairman of the drive. It was being: hoped that the re port from Hazltjtls would put Gates county over the top in the campaign. Sunbury Ruritans To Sponsor Show Friday at School The Sunbury Ruritan club will sponsor a unique program on Friday night, November 12, it was announced this week. The event will begin with a barbecue at 6 o’clock which will be followed by a program at 8 •o’clock in the school auditorium. The program has been divided :nto the following four sections: ^ 1. A mock trial, Cherry Ver ■ Powell, in which Ruritan embers will make up the court officials while members of the Sunbury school faculty and others in the community serve as witnesses. 2. Songs by Miss Mae Belle -Edwards, member of the Driver, Va., school faculty, and Bobby "Watson) popular radio star. 3. Auction sale in which art icles donated by membsrs of the Ruritan club will be sold. 4. A dance in the library of the school. Winners in the canning con tests conducted during the past several months among the mem bers of the 4-H clubs and the home demonstration clubs were announced this week by Miss Ona Patterson, home agent. First prize in the 4-H club contest was taken by Helen Page Spivey of Sunbury. Annie Hope Blanchard of Hobbsville won second, and Dorothy Lawrence of Eure third. Other entries in the 4-H club contest were received from Cur tis Lee Briggs of Hayesville; Faye Carter of Gatesville, Re becca Eure of Eure, Etheleen Brown of Gatesville, Irma Hud gins of Hobbsville and Edna Neal Harrell of Eure. In the home demonstration club contest Mrs. W. T. Council of Ariel won first prize; Mrs. E. P. Story of Eure second and Mrs. Elton Taylor of Corapeake third. Entries were also received from Mrs. Hallett Riddick of Hobbsville; Mrs. Lee Riddick of Corapeake; Mrs. B. V. Brown of Carter; Mrs. S. E. Spivey of Zion; Mrs. C. H. Carter of Car ter; Mrs. G. C. Worrell of Mid dle Swamp; Mrs. H. V. Beamon of Gatesville; Mrs. A. A. Hurdle of Trotsville; Mrs. E. R. Draper of Drum Hill; Mrs. V. M. Park er of Roduco and Mrs. Alice Hinton of Hobbsville. LEGION PLANS OBSERVANCE Members of the Gates county post will hear Judge A. P. God win in an Armistice Day speech Thursday night at 7:30 in the Legion Hut in Gatesville. Dutch supper will be served by the ladies of the Gatesville Baptist church. BANK SPONSORS WAR BOND CONTEST The Bank of Gates is spon soring a war £>ond contest in the school at Gates, Robin Hood, cashisr., announced. A $25 prize is being offered the classroom which sells the highest percentage of bonds per pupil. Already a total of $98.85 has been sold. Stamps are sold every day. Hood will be in the school every Monday to sell bonds. JOLIFF RETURNED FOR NINTH YEAR The Rev. J. M. Joliff has been returned to the Methodist churchi in Gatesville for the ninth consecutive year. No other minister in the Elizabeth City conference has served as long in the same town. Gatesville School Contributes $51 To Jr. Red Cross A total of $55.03 has'been col lected in the Gates county schools for the Junior Red Cross with the Gatesville school students con tributing $51—over half the goal of $100 .for the county, accord ing to a report made by Mrs. W. Henry Overman. Contributions from the three Negro schools are: Milley Bridge $2.03; Aerial $1; and Hinton’s Grove $1. Other schools in the county have not yet completed their campaigns. The drive for the Junior Red Cross is scheduled to close on November 15. Demonstration To Hold Ann Meet Novembe Homp Demonstration Club Women from all sections of Gates county will gather in the school at Eurev on Thursday,, November 18, for their annual fall meeting. Plans for the event were an nounced this week by Miss Ona Patterson, home agent, who has been working and planning the affair for the past several weeks. Mrs. Hazel E. Wheeler of Roa noke Rapids, former home agent in Halifax county, will give the principal demonstration during the morning program. The de monstration will be on “Christ mas in Gates County Homes.” She will give suggestions for table, mantle, door, window and other decorations. Highlight of the afternoon program will be a special serv ice honoring the mothers and their sons and daughters who are in the armed services of the United States. Dorothy Lawrence and Rebec ca Eure, members of the Eure 4-H club, will present a de monstration on the proper ways to walk on the highway. Prizes to be awarded are as follows: pressure cooker to club having— -highest score during year; silver cup to club having highest percentage of attendance at meeting; canning prizes to women putting up the best jars this season; prize to woman who has canned the most per mem ber of family; and perfect at tendancg certificates to those who have attended every meet ing this year. The meeting will start at 10:30 and it is hoped that the program will be completed by 3:30 p. m. Lunch will be served. Hostess clubs are Eure, Roduco and Car ters. King Funeral Services Held On November 5 Funeral services for James Luther King, 60, who died at his home Wednesday afternoon. November 3 were conducted Friday afternoon, November 5 from the home by the pastor of Sandy Cross Baptist church, Rev. T. Sloan Guy. Mr. King is survived by h's widow, Mrs. Blanch King; three sons, Willard Howard, Tola Lee. and Thomas William; and one daughter* ' Miss Beaulah King. He is also survived by one sis ter, Mrs. W. A. Stallings, all of HobbsviHe. Interment was in the family cemetery. Active pallbearers were Ralph Russell, Herman Ward, Melton Ward, Kimbel Stallings, Julian Ward and Buster Eason. Nick Long, Jr., Is Commissioned Nick Long, Jr., of Roduco, was awarded his wings and commission as a second lieuten ant in the U. S. army air forces in ceremonies conducted Nov ember 3 from Altus Field, Al tus, Oklahoma. A picture of Lt. Long will be printed in the In dex in an early issue. Marion LiJ Completes Work At Undersea Base Marion E. Lilley, 25, fireman 2/c, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. T. Lilley, Gatesville, has completed basic training at the Submarine School, Submarine Base, New London, Conn., for duty with our growing fleet of underseas fighers. Fireman Lilley will be en titled to wear the twin dolphin insignia of the submarine serv ice alter further experience a board a submarine during which he must demonstrate to his com manding officer that he is fully qualified to carry out the duties of his rate. The insignia is re garded as a mark of distinction throughout the Navy. Lilley a 11 e n d ed Gatesville high school, has been in the Navy since March and had pre liminary instruction at Bain bridge, Maryland. Ceiling Prices Announced On Eggs, Chickens Ceiling prices which the con sumer is supposed to pay the retailer for three articles were announced Monday by Mrs. L. C. Hand, Jr., price, clerk in the Gates county rationing board. Eggs should be sold to the consumer at 53c per dozen; but ter at 51c per pound; chickens, boilers and fryers, 37c per pound on foot; hens, 33c per pound on foot; roosters, 28c per pound on foot. Marine Returns From Sea Duty Sgt. James W. Hill of the U. S. M. G. returned from patrol duty in the North Atlantic, and spent a few days last week with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Hill, and brother, Darius Hill, in Sunburv. He has now returned to his post of duty at New York.
