Miss Maggie Ellis of Green ville spent the weekend with her mother, Mrs. Nellie Ellis. Miss Brona Holder spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Holder. Miss Margaret Hughes of Nor folk, and Bill Hughes spent the weekend with their aunt, Mrs. P. L. Hofler, and Mr. Hofler. Mrs. W. C. Mullen and daugh ter, Carol, ^returned home last night after visiting her husband, W. C. Mullen, at E.N.C. Sanitor ium, Wilson, and Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Mullen at Eure. Col. and Mrs. George H. Chadderton af Alexandria, Va., and Miami Beach, Fla., announce the engagement of their daughter, Miss Jessie Ault Chadderton, to Lt. Edward Redden Godwin, Army Air Corps, son of Judge and Mrs. A. P. Godwin of Gatesville. Miss Chadderton attended St. Margaret’s School, Tappahannock, Va., and is a member of Delta Phi Sorority, Miami Beach, Fla. Lt. Godwin is a graduate of Officer’s Candidate School, Miami Beach, Fla., and is now a student officer in training for pilot at Maxwell Field, Ala. Seniors Honored By Gates juniors Gates high school junior-sen ior banquet was held Thursday at the‘Peanut City Inn, followed by a dance at a bottling plant. Decorations were carried out in class colors of blue and gold. Paul Hofler presided at the dinner as toastmaster with a welcome by Owen Tyler, and a response by Lillian Parker. Dorothy Lee Hayes responded to the toast to the school board and Nelda Council to that for the local board. The county su perintendent was toasted by Jackie Whitehurst. The class prophecy was given by Ray Buck, the toast. to the faculty by Billie Greene, and that to the seniors by Fred Jackson. Covers were laid for 76, of which 48 were members of the junior and senior classes. Fa culty members attending were R. E. Beasley, principal, Rev. T. J. Whitehead, Mrs. G. L. Gat ling and Mrs. Elizabeth Darden. Entertain For Men in Service Mr. O. C. Turner and Mr. and Mrs. Robin Hood enter tained Monday night in honor of Lt. and Mrs. Thomas Leslie Carter and Ensign Harry Rid dick who left Tuesday to report for foreign duty. Covers were laid for ten. Oth ers present were Dr. and Mrs, T. L. Carter, Sr., Dr. and Mrs. Warren Detweiler, and Miss Elizabeth Beale of Suffolk. Miss Patterson Is Home Ec Speaker Miss Ona Patterson was guest speaker at the meeting of the Gatesville home economics club, “The Future Homemakers of America” Friday. She used as her topic, “What are you going to be when you grow up?” She listed a few points on how to achieve success by being healthy, well-groomed and cheerful. v 4rH Council In Quarterly ‘Meet The regular quarterly meet ing of the 4-H county council was held. Monday night, April 17, in the agricultural building, 'Gatesville, with Mary Anne Beaman presiding and Phillip Harrell acting as secretary. At the business session pro gram and refreshment commit tees were named and planning for the health contest, and mak ing the decision that the council contribute to the concer control drive were completed. The social period, including re creation led by Miss Ona Pat terson and refreshments served by the Hobbsville club, was en joyed by all. Hobbsville Class Given a Party The senior class of Hobbsville high school was entertained by its grademothers, ■ Mrs. T. J. Stallings and Mrs. R. E. Bagley, Tuesday night, April 18, at a picnic on the pier at Hertford. After supper, they attended the movie, “Government Girl.” Those who enjoyed the social were Nell Rountree, Edward Hobbs, Maxine Stallings, Mar vin Wiggins, June Hathaway, Tom Bagley, Gwendolyn Hobbs, James Hendrix, Margaret Roun tree, Lindsey Bunch, Mae Belle Hobbs, Marvin King, Jean Hun ter Spivey, Harvey Spivey, Har vey Spivey, Joyce Riddick, Mar ion Trotman, Delsie Winslow, Frances Hendrix, Annie Hope Blanchard, Mrs. Bagley and Mrs. Stallings. PRE-SCHOOL CLINIC The pre-school clinic for Hobbsville community will be held at the Hobbsville school on Wednesday, April 26, at 1:30 p. m. Dr. J. M. Jackson, district health officer, who will conduct the clinic, urges all parents to bring their children who are planning to enter school next fall. Diphtheria and smallpox vac cinations will be administered to all who need it.
