Each Older Youth member has the privilege of inviting a friend to go. Transportation will be furnished by M'. B. Johnson’s bus for $1.25 per person. Plans have been made by the picnic committee to leave the agricul tural building, Gatesville, promptly at 7 o’clock on Satur day morning, August 12. Here’s a recipe for delicious ‘Bread and Butter Pickle”. • Clip it for your file. 30 cucumbers (1 inch in dia meter). 10 onions (medium). 4 tablespoons salt. Slice cucumbers and onions, sprinkle with salt. Let stand one hour. Drain in a cheese cloth bag. Make a spiced vinegar us ing the following ingredients. 5 cups vinegar. 2 teaspoons celery seed. 2 teaspoons ground ginger. 4 cups sugar. 1 teaspoon tumeric. 2 teaspoons white mustard seed. Let spiced vinegar come to a boil; add cucumbers and onions and bring to boiling point. Sim mer for ten minutes. Seal in sterilized jars. Zion Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Hudgins and Mesdames C. W. Hinton and Sallie H. Hathaway of Gates ville attended the funeral of their uncle, H. B. Jones, in Ed enton Tuesday afternoon. The Woman’s Society of Christian Service met Thursday night with Mrs. W. E. Brown. Mrs. Darlie Bunch spent Fri day in Norfolk. Mr. and Mrs. Steward Roun tree and daughter, Anne of Washington, D. C., are visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. L. Brown. Ray Hollo well, U. S. Navy, and Mrs. Hollowell and little son, Ray, Jr., of Norfolk, spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. P. H. Blanchard. Mrs. J. W. Hudgins, Sr., and Francis Marvin Hudgins are spending several days with Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Vernon of Hope well, Va. Miss 'Irma Hudgins spent last week in Gatesville visiting her aunt, Mrs. Sallie H. Smith In Ordnance Group AFHQ, Mediterranean Thea ter.—'In the thousands of acres comprising the domain of a North African Ordnance batta lion, are shells of every caliber from a 22 practice-firing to a 240-millimeter howitzer shell— a big, mean-looking piece of ammunition with a snub nose and no features of beauty for the enemy. All this ammunition is carefully stored in bays pro tected from the elements to keep them in tip-top shape. Commanded by Major Thom as B. Lynch of San Francisco, Calif., there is a large concen tration of explosives in the dumps of this battalion. Major Lynch states that “there’s very small chance of even, one small shell exploding the way the men handle that ammo. They treat it lovingly and carefully so that it will reach the front in A-l condition to give Jerry night mares.” The roster of this battalion in cludes Sgt. Raleigh B. Riddick Sixty-two members of a Mo bile Port unit of the Transpor tation Corps were recently awarded the Good Conduct Medal in Northern Ireland, ac cording to a release front Head quarters, the European Theater of Operations. Employers Neglect To Prepare Forms A number of employers in the Northeastern area have failed to prepare Form WMC-NC-106 and mail them to the^U. S. Employ ment Service Offices, stated P. B. Pollock, area director of the War Manpower Commission. These forms indicate employ ment as of March 1, April 1, and May 1, 1944, and ithe hires, and separations- during April, 1944. The responsibility of forward ing this information to the Em ployment Service Offices dc • finitely belongs to the employer, and failure to do so will prevent the establishment of a ceiling for his business, thus restricting him from hiring any additional workers, Mr. Pollock said. The area director urged employers to mail these forms so that their ceilings may be recommended io the Manpower Priorities Com mitee which meets in the area office in Washington next week.
