December Meetings For Farm Owners There is an advertisement in this issue of the Index and there was a similar one last week that should be of particular interest to all landowners in Gates County. The advertisement is a legal necessary step in an nouncing five community meet ings (legally termed hearings) at which farmers will be given an explanation of what a Soil Conservation District is and how the county may be benefited by becoming a part of a district. A. A. Cone, asst. State con servationist, State College, Ra leigh, will be at each of the five meetings to discuss and answer questions on the subject. After the meetings (hearings) the landowners will be given an opportunity to vote by mail if they want Gates county to be in the Roanoke-Chowan District composed of Hertford, Bertie and Northampton Counties. By being in a district the pro perty owners are given the free service of specialists in soils, woodland management, general farm management, ditch i n g (open and tile) and other special phases of farming affecting the soil. Poultry and livestock pro blems are excluded. There is no cost involved either by the county or the individual pro perty in the use of this service. Besides the three counties mentioned above, Chowan and Perquimans are in a district (the Albemarle) and three other counties, Currituck, Camden and Pasquotank have petitioned for membership. The local county agent after consulting with other agents and farmers in the organized coun ties feels that Gates county farmers should have the oppor tunity of knowing about activi ties in a Soil conservation Dis trict and the accept or reject as they deem best. . The schedule meetings are as follows: Gatesville, agricultural building, Monday, December 11, at 7:30; Hobbsville, school build ing, December 12, at 7:30; Sun bury, school building, December 1*3 at 7:30; Gates, school build ing, December 14 at 7:30; Eure school building, December 15 at 7:30. ~ Car of Wheat Monthly Thirty-two farmers unloaded 1,920 bushels of feed wheat at Gates November 18, 20, and 21. Another car (the 14th) has been ordered shipped to Gates for delivery between December 15 and 31. There is still some wheat not spoken for. The prices at present are $1.38 and $1.41 per bushel, respectively. Farmers are finding wheat a reasonably priced feed and a mighty good supplement or sub stitute for^ corn to feed pigs, hogs, and poultry. Some grow ers soak the wheat over night in water ,and some have it coarsely ground for their hogs. It should not be fed whol6 except to chickens. The county AAA committee will continue to order wheat as long as |the fafmers desire it. i f ■ j —— Negro News By H. L. MITCHELL Christianity is the good man’s text; his life, the illustration.— Selected. Hinton’s Grove Club Does Outstanding Work A recent report made by the Hinton’s Grove 4-H club reveals that much progress has been made by the club as a group dur ing the year. At the request of the Negro county agent to raise and conserve more food, the club boys and girls gave special at tention to growing vegetables and raising poultry. As a result of this effort the following has been reported by the club: canned foods, 27 quarts of beets, 64 quarts of tomatoes, 33 quarts of corn, 34 quarts of lima beans and 24 quarts of peas. There were also 200 chicks raised and sold to purchase stamps and bonds. A special project being car ried on by the boys and girls now is raising money to pur chase playground equipment for the Hinton’s Grove school. In this effort $64.00 have been re ported and a 5-ply combination ! swing and slide has been ordered. Mrs. M. W. Riddick, 'a former club member who is now teach ing at the Hinton’s Grove school and is serving as a club leader, says, “We find it fun to work to gether and learn how to save.” Other leaders are E. M. Blanchard and Willie Freeman. 4-H Clubs to Re-organize The Negro home and county agents in Gates county have made plans for the re-organiza tion of all 4-H clubs in the coun ty. The outlook for 1945 is some what encouraging as it is expect ed that club members will be able to participate in camps, pic nics and other regular activities. Besides regular project work, it is hoped that each club in the county will select a neighborhood project to carry out as a group. * Legal Advertising I NOTICE OF RESALE OF REAL PROPERTY Under and by virtue of an order of the Superior Court of Gates County in that certain pioceeding, J.
