Usually it’s an old-fashioned flatiron heated on a pot-bellied stove and an Army blanket and table serving as a board. Lieut. Lost on Sub Shark, Walter R, Blanchard Was County Native Eason’s X Roads. — A chief torpedoman wno enlisted in the United States Navy in 1919 and was lost when the submarine Shark was sunk off Manila Bay in March, 1941, was a native of Gates county, it has been pointed out to the Index. The name of Walter R. Blanchard, U. S. N., is added this week to the Index Roll of Honor and brings to 20 the number of Gates county men killed in action or training since World War Two began. Blanchard, 39 years of age when the Shark was lost, is a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Elisha Blanchard of Eason’s Cross Roads. Two brothers are also in the armed forces. S. Sgt. Floyd W. Blanchard is at Camp Livingston, La., and Cpl. Luther Blanchard is stationed near ’alcutta, India. A nephew, Pfc. Bernard E. Hobbs, was killed on Iwo Jima, and another nephew, Marvin E. Hobbs, is now serving in the South Pacific. Twelve of his first cousins are in the armed forces. Blanchard’s widow and son, Irvin, live in San Francisco, Calif. SPECIAL PROGRAM Eure. — A Mother’s Day ahd Memorial program will be pre sented at Eure’s Christian Church Sunday at 3 o’clock. WAR CASUALTY. Pfc. Ber- j nard E. Hobbs, above, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter E. Hobbs of Gates, was killed on March 1 in the fighting on Iwo Jima Island. Twenty years of age, Hobbs, Fourth Marine Divi sion, was Gates county’s sev enteenth son reported killed since the outbreak of the war. MIDDLE SWAMP TO OBSERVE MOTHER’S DAY SUNDAY Middle Swamp. — Mother’s Day will be observed at Middle Swamp Church Sunday with short talks by the Rev. T. Sloane Guy, Sr., and by Chester R. Mor ris of Currituck, solicitor of the First Judicial District, who is the son of Mrs. W. F. Morris. \ - 89 in Victory Carden Contest In Gates County The names of 89 entrants in the victory garden contest were solicited and sent in by neighbor hood leaders. The Office of Civil ian Defense (OCD) in the coun ty, I. C. Hand, chairman, is spon soring the movement and the extension agents are cooperat ing. It is hoped that every garden owner is doing his or her best, despite the unfavorable grow ing season, to have one of the best gardens possible. Contestants are urged not to “drop out” or “quit” the contest just because of a poor start. If at any time the home or farm agent can be of service in an advisory capa city on diseases, insects, spray materials, spray equipment etc., they are available for help. Townships in number of en tries are as follows: Mintons ville, 23; Hall, 20; Holly Grove, 13; Gatesville, 12; Reynoldson, 10; Hunters Mill, 6; Hasletts, 5. School Clinic Scheduled For Next Wednesday The pre-school clinic for Gates Training School, colored, will be held at the school on Wednesday of next week at 1:30. Dr. W. P. Jordan, district health Officer, who will conduct the clinic, urges all parents to bring their children who are planning to enter school next fall. Diphtheria and smallpox vac cinations will be administered to all who need it. The North Carolina Legisla ture passed a law this year which requires that every child be vac cinated against whooping caugh during the first year of life. Army Headquarters, Pacific Area.—Thomas J. Over man of Hobbsville, N. C., has been promoted from technician fifth grade to corporal in re cognition of battle-proven cour age and ability against the Japanese ip the Palau, Islands. Corporal Overman is a mem ber of the 81st “Wildcat” In fantry Division, which last fall invaded the Palau and other Western Caroline Islands. ^ The soldier’s father, J. C. Sunday 1$ DeSiated As Day Of PrayerW President The White House.—In a simple straight-forward mes sage to the American people at 9 o’clock Tuesday morn mg, President Harry S. Truman proclaimed the Allied Victory in Europe and appointed Sunday, April 13, as a day of prayer throughout the United States KILLED IN FRANCE. Chief Warrant Officer James E. Hin ton, above, was killed in ac tion in France on March 3. Gates county’s nineteenth war casualty, Hinton was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James R. Hin ton of the Carter section. ... Methodist Zone Meeting Set For Thursday at 10:30 Corapeake.—The Gates Coun ty Zone meeting of the Methodist Women’s Societies of Christian Srevice will meet at Parker’s Methodist Church tomor r o w, Thursday. The meeting will begin at 10:30 and will include morning and afternoon sessions. Mrs. Byrum announces that the speakers for the meeting will in clude Mrs. George Jackson of Hertford, Mrs. Evans of Eden ton, Mrs. T. A. Collins of Gates ville, and Mrs. C. V. Cross of Gates. All of the ladies of the zone are reminded to make a special effort to attend, the zone meeting if at all possible that profitable day together may be had. The President’s designation of Sunday was interpreted to mean the day should be dedicated to prayer for strength against the enemies still to be overcome, and to thanksgiving for the victory won over Germany. The White House proclama tion followed a solid day of re joicing in the nation’s larger cities, the surrender of German armies in Europe having already been made public early Monday morning. Mr. Truman made no mention of Tuesday as V-E Day, but Tuesday was already being celebrated as Victory in Europe Day. The White House statement was made simultaneously with See TRUMAN, Page 10 Hurlie Lawrence Killed in Action On Western Front Gatesville. — Pfc. Hurlie B. Lawrence, 26, formerly of Gates ville, was killed in the European theatre' of operations on April 19, according to a message re ceived this week by his aunt, Mrs. M. W. Brown, and his grandmother, Mrs. Etta Hayes. Private Lawrence was the son of Mrs. Margaret Lawrence o Suffolk, and the late Hurlie Lawrence, both formerly of Gatesville. The message reaching Gates came from Private Lawrence’s wife, Mrs. Ruby Lawrence ' of Mississippi, who lives there with her parents and her two small children, Hurlie and Dianne. Private Lawrence entered the armed forces in the fall of 1944 and went overseas in January. He had been employed by the Virginia State Highway Com mission at Williamsburg. EARL S. PIERCE HOME FROM NORTH PACIFIC Sunbury. — Earl S. Pierce, EM3/c is back at his post of duty after spending a 15-day pass with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Pierce of Sunbury. Pierce spent 18 months on duty in the North Pacific. End-of-Year School Activities Announce Graduation Time Sunbury. — End-of-the-year school activities leading up to commencement time are taking the attention of Gates people. The Gatesville high school senior class play will. be given next Thursday, May 17, and music classes at Gates and Sunbury will be presented in recitals on May 9 and May 11, according to announcements reachi n g t4i e Index. “Laugh, Clown,” is the title of the three-act comedy to be of fered at 8:30 o’clock in thv Gatesville school auditorium on May 17. This is the annual senior play and officially opens the series of commencement exercises.
