Governor Carr commuted to life imprisonment the death sentence of Richard Broadnax, colored, who was under sentence to be hanged at Yanceyville for assault upon a little negro girl. There were grave doubts of his guilt. We weie shown a sample of fine Wilson county tobacco the other day which bad been cured in sixty days after planting. It was of the finest texture and good color. The crop in Eastern Carolina this year is said to be exceptionally fine. Mr. John H. Dameron was buried Friday evening at Lick Fork church, near Ruffin. He was the second son of Elder J. A. Pameron. a young man of fine ability, of good edueation and an upright, moral man: a centleman of the old true type. Sheriff Womack, of Caswell, passed here taesday en route to Raleigh with Dick Broadnax, whom he was carry ing to the penitentiary to serve a life sentence. Broadnax was sen tenced to be hung last Friday for at tempted rape but his sentence was commuted oy Gov. Carr to a life term in the penitentiary. The reports of correspondents of the Weekly Weather Crop Bulletin for the week ending Monday, August 6th, are favorable with some excep tions. Thrre has been altogether too much rain in the Southern portions of the Eastern and Central Districts, especially in parts of Johnston, Anson. Richmond, Wake. Montgom ery and Cumberland counties. In consequence lowlands are flooded and crops damaged. Cotton is growing to weed. The same conditions pre vail to a much less extent in the western counties. Over all the rest of the State the weather conditions have been very favorable. The tem perature has been above normal until Sunday, and enough rain has fallen everywhere.
