Sv. A. 0. LEWIS f - -i -4 y-"j--.-'K.--S-- i WHEN A CADDIE i INTERVENED By MARLE CWEN CLMMIMS Considering that G icy son and .Brad bury, were botu ardent enthusiasts at tbo 'game, It was not sun-rising that they should Lave dwided to let golf be the arbiter of their fates. The two young men were desi rately in love With Mareia Van Zandt. So, for that matterwere half a dozen others of XUf male, contingent at Westerfeldt. But all reo;,'uized that Gieysun ami J'.rad bury were the two favorites, nnu ti e withdrawal of one of then from the Deld would naturally place the oth;r In a fair position to win out. It was Bradlnuy who offered the chalienw of a nine hole tnateh, ttie loser of which should lmmedin U ly puck bag and baggage and decamp. (JrejKon had Considered the proposi tion for a brief 'minute, then accepted, and a date was set for the trial of skill; ' ; '; It was a fair contest, even U'ounb there was a difference of four In the records of the two players. Bradbury V best score for the nine holes was thirty-seven, but he was very erratic, usu ally playing somewhere In the neigh borhood of forty. (Jreyson, however, bad never played around in better than forty-one, but he was as steady as o machine and could be depended upon not to vary from that score by more than one or two strokes. Probably the explanation of tlie dif ference In their playing Was to be found In the respective habits of the two men, for while Grey son was not In the least what one would call a rabid prohibitionist he knew when to stop. Bradbury, ou the other hand, was the hotel's best patron of the little room downstairs with the long brass fool rail. .','' On the momentous day which was tu decide their fates the two men with their caddies sought the links. Seotty Ferguson, the red haired, freckled faced little chap who carried Greyson's bag, bad been bis dub bearer ever since the latter's arrival at the otel and had also been the messenger several oc casions for 'delivering bincdes of vio lets, boxes of candy, etc. The other caddie was the greenkeeper's latest Im portation from town and had been cho sen because Bradbury had quarreled with every one of the other boys who were on the caddies' bench when they started out. Grey son won the toss and drove off first, making the straightaway la five, as he generally did. Bradbury unually JIB WALKKD Vf I'O nilADHUUY AND HELD our ins iiA.su, played the first green lit five also, but by n fortunate npproach shot he holed It In .our, thus gaining a lead of one. The next two holes, the ravltio and rest-awhile, were halved In Ave each, but on the fourth putting green Grey sou made a phenomenal gobble and tied the score at nineteen. 'Without 'doubt It was not intended by the: two players that their caddies should know the stake which was be. ijig played for, but from Nevernl re in!il!L!3wli!cljScotty.ovcrhcard.,.aa,bq trudged along-with the clubs he must have Jumped at a pretty accurate con clusion, and as tho four rested In the frliado at the fifth tree lie confided some thing to the new caddie from town Which made that youth observe 'tho re innlmler of. the' game with, vastly more Interest than ho had hitherto displayed. Now, the fifth hole of the Wester feldt course, called the frying pun. Is the worst one. of the nine, tbo drive-oft being directly over n deep gravel pit. It was on this fair green that Brad bury Btole a lead of three, for by a pood drive nnd a long brassle shot be clearetl tbo hn.ard nnd was in the hole In live. The frying pan had always been a Wnteiloo for Greyspn, nnd on this day H proved even worse than usual, for bt topped bis ball twice and then broke bis midiron Just above tho whipping while trying to recover. The next two holes were halved In four each, so that the wore ns the two players walked up to the eighth tve was 33 to C3 in Brad bury's favor. Whether It was the result of nn over indulgence In "rlckleg" on the previous WofitilgrWreffin whether It wns due simply to nervous ness of account of tho Blze of the (takes'. for which they were play I n? Will never be known, but for (ovm -Hiiye I'rndlniry weMo the bad cu tha MM I 'll uSyi tighth hole, and It cost biia six before lie holed It whereas he usually played It In four, as his companion succeeded In doing. ' Greyson's lead of tbiee on this hole Just made up for the same number he had made on the fifih, so that the score nt tlei last grceir -was niin tied at thirty nine. There was an air of suppressed ex citement about both 'players and cad dies as Greyson built bis tee and pre pared to drive for the last time. The ninth bole Is about 2J0 yards and Is lo cated on the farther kIiI? of a little bill, so that only the upper half of the red flag Is visible from where the driv er stands. Seotty, the caddie, had gone on ahead, and when "Grey son's ball Just cleared the brow of the bill be followed quickly after It ana disap peared over the other fide. lie found that the ball had landed In the middle of a bunch of fog, so that It lay In on almost unplayable position. It was the work of but a moment tc kick the ball sharply from its resting place toward the hole; then be ran back to the top of the hill and shouted: "You're dead, two feet from the bole; Mr. Greyson. It's a cinch for two." Then the Vickies, or the nerves, oi something or other, got to work on Bradbury again, for be sliced bis drive, and the ball fell within a hundred yards of the green. He made h gallant attempt to recover, however, and with Ids next stroke stymied bis ball with that of his companion. But the game was over, for Greyson putted in with bis next stroke, win ning the:-watch by One. Then he walk ed up to Bradbury and bold out bis hand. "Hard luck, old man," be said cheer lly. "Better luck next time." But Bradbury only muttered some thing under his breath, and, snatching bis bag from the caddie, be strode Off the links. . " "Here,: 'Seotty," called Greyson as bis club bearer moved away "here's a lit tle present for you. I feel flush today." And ho tossed toward the boy a coin the size of which made that youth's eyes sparkle. As the two caddies walked back to the greenkeeper's they talked over the game Just finished, and after exacting a promise of absolute secrecy Seotty revealed to bis companion his doings at the last bole. "It wasn't 'cause Mr. Greyson always tips me that I monkeyed with the score," bo said In Justification of his ac tion, "though he Is the best man of the two, nnd I hope he wins out with Miss Van Zandt. 1 wouldn't have cooked that Bradbury cuss either even If be did biff mo once or twice when I laugh ed at his scufflng, but I saw hiin foozle twice today without counting It, and at the eighth bole he lifted his ball out of a cuppy lie when be thought do om was looking. "And, anyway," he added conclusive ly, "ns Agasslz or some of them big poe fellers sayi 'All's fair in love nnd war, and I'm blamed glad I done it." Storle of Joe Cannon. While serving his second term In con gress Joe Cannon wns driving on a muddy road in March, after the ad journment of a short session, when he met a township road supervisor, who said:-... . .''; ";. , '".' "Joe, do they dock you when you are away from congress?" "No; mywages rua on Just the same," said Undo Joe. .....'..-, "The township doesn't pay people when they dou't work," said the farin er..: "I .expect It would bo better to dock ua when we do work," replied Uucle Joe gravely, A Democratic member once ventured to challenge one of bis statements, "Blank Is mistaken," sharply replied Cannon. This form of denial was con trary to the rules because it mentioned a member by name instead of as "the gentleman from Indiana." The offend ed Democrat called the speaker's at tention to the breach of rules. The speaker explained and instructed the new member to proceed in order. With n sweeping and courteous bow, which has since become famous, Cannon said; "If the venerable and august gentle man who is such a stickler for the rules will bear with me, I beg to Inform him that he lies under a mistake." World's Work. Getting 1IU Teeth on Edge-. When the now boarder arrived din ner was ready to be served, and the hostess, -wishing to give blm time to arrange bis toilet, courteously delayed tho repast a few minutes. As he did not put in nnlippearance promptly aft er tho ringing or the second bell, and ns tho old boarders bad assembled at ta ble, the Doardlng mistress sent Bridget, a recent Importation from the Emerald Isle, to tell him that dinner Was ready. When tho waitress knocked, the new boarder was unpacking bis valise. Re sponding to a secoud knock, he stood at the door holding a set of false teeth In one hand and a nail fllo iu tho other and said: "Yes, I'll be down In a minute." The domestic stared at blm in amaze ment, and returning to the dining room announced sharply: "He'll be down, ma'am, a 8 soon as he isharpens bis teeth." New York Press. Mil rr Inge Superatltiona. Wliat la lie Inn Done In Variuna States to Improve the Highways. The state senate of Florida bai passed a resolution tuomorializiug con gress to pass the Browniow bill. In Maine 132 towns have made spe cial appropriation for the improve ment of state roads with state aid aa against 105 towns last year. Joseph W. Hunter of Jenkintown has been appointed state highway commia slouer of Pennsylvania and will there fore have charge of the expenditure of the largest sum ever appropriated at one time by any American state for road improvement. Schenectady county, X. Y., bas suc cessfully tried the experiment of plac ing the prisoners eourlned in the coun ty Jail upon the roads In workiug out a contract for road improvement which was awarded to the county. One re sult of this is the avoidance of Sche nectady county by tramps. That Florida will soon be among the states that lead in the mileage of good roads is indicated by tho fact that there Is now over $300,000 available in the Internal Improvement fund and that there i3 a reserve of 5,000,000 acres of swamp nnd overflowed lands, worth from $1 to $5 an acre. By a re cent act of the legislature this was made available for the building of hard roads. Good Roads Magazine. Knved from Terriblv Heath. The family of Mrs M P.
